REAPER 4 User Guide (and more!) now available!
In response to a growing number of requests, we have decided to release the REAPER 4 documentation ahead of the actual software itself, to help you to become familiar with the new features in advance of getting your hands on the final product. Such is the magnificence of REAPER 4 that we have not one but two publications for you!
A free PDF User Guide is available here:
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/userguide.php
A spiral bound hard copy is available here:
Up and Running, a REAPER User Guide
http://www.lulu.com/product/paperbac...guide/14740381
This has been completely reorganised and rewritten and replaces v 3.xx versions. It contains everything you would expect it to, including a detailed coverage of the new features of REAPER 4. Near the front there is a summary table of major new features. In addition, there are countless other innovations and changes too numerous to list that weave their way throughout the document.
For those people who like a hard copy, please consider buying one from LULU. Without the modest income that I derive from sales it would simply not be possible for me to continue to put in the amount of time it takes to produce and maintain this document.
I have also produced another more advanced guide REAPER 4 Unleashed: Unlock Your Inner REAPER.
http://www.lulu.com/product/paperbac...ashed/16041325
This is more like an intermediate/advanced hands-on workshop and course than a conventional manual. With about 50 tutorials, it focusses more on how you can benefit from features such as mouse modifiers, preferences settings, custom toolbars, actions and menus, track templates, FX management, project building, routing, etc. than simply on the mechanics of using those features. It includes a stack of free resources, such as sample toolbars, macros, templates, etc.
This can be purchased as a PDF or printed and spiral bound copy. To help you assess it, the first 30 or so pages, including table contents, can be downloaded free from here:
http://www.4shared.com/document/H1dU...ashedDemo.html
I'd like to make it clear that everything that was available free before (and more) is still available for free in the new edition of the User Guide. Nobody will be expected to pay for what previously was free. The extra book is there to go into greater depth for those who wish to do this.
Finally … some people will undoubtedly wish to know whether this material may be available as an e-book, or in kindle format or some such. The short answer is that right now I am pretty exhausted. It's possible that one day the User Guide might well find its way to market in some additional format but that won't be the foreseeable future. I need a rest!
P.S. If people find typos etc that they wish to bring to my attention, please do NOT post therm to this thread, but instead PM me. Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your work. And people: Buy his books - they're worth every penny (hell, I'd even buy a book an irrigation in Mesopotamia if it was written by Nicholas)

Yay nicholas!!!
You don't know how many times Ive come close to bugging you for a sneak peak!
Congratulations!
Wouldn't be Reaper without your user guide.
Downloading it now.
And FYI to those who don't know this: If you put the pdf in your main Reaper install folder, it will appear under Reaper's Help menu and launch directly in your pdf reader. (I recommend using the Foxit reader instead of Acrobat. Or is there a newer & better alternative to AR than Foxit?)

Thanks a lot mr. Nicholas!
I found a little thing here:
2.3 Project Settings
Under Recording Formatthere is this sentence:
which should go under Path
Great work anyways, reading a bit more as long as my baby girl lets me :-p

Just downloaded and thought I'd read a chapter or so before I comment - and could hardly make me stop. Now I'm already an hour in. Thankfully there is still plenty left. Great writing, as always.
The unleashed book looks very promising. Thanks for providing a good chunk of sneak peak into it. That'll be #1 on my birthday wish list this year.
Big thanks to all people involved.

SWS Extensions for REAPER 4
One small thing guys, I nearly forgot. Some of the examples in "Unleashed" require SWS Extensions v2.x - version 2 of SWS extensions have not yet been released but should be available about the same time as REAPER 4 is released, so you won't have to be patient for very long!

Hi Geoffrey:
I had purchased your "Up and Running: A REAPER User Guide" (REAPER 3 User Guide, when it was a payable product) and "ReaMix: Breaking the Barriers with REAPER" books, and it was the better thing for my REAPER 3 learning process.
I already purchase the new REAPER 4 Unleashed and I'm downloading the Up and Running: A REAPER User Guide (REAPER 4 User Guide, now free).
Thank you for your nice and hard work. The brazilian REAPER users certainly will get vast and precious information in these books.
Best regards.

Thanks for sharing it with us Goeffrey. Browsing through it now.
I want to be able to tell my fellow engineers what a manual costs when I share a few of the high points about Reaper 4 on our next meeting.
These two manuals are a great work of reference for everyone who wants to learn about Reaper all by themselves and through books.
I have an account at Lulu.com and took a look at what shipping for the manuals costs to Germany. In typical UK fashion, where apparently these books are produced for the EU, the shipping charges to any place other than the UK are extremly high, but for these books that's ok IMHO.
Reaper v4 Manual "Up and Running" 398 pages, 27.04 Euros (22.05 + 4.99 post&packaging) to Germany.
REAPER 4 Unleashed 183 pages, 19.67 Euros (14.68 + 4.99 post&packaging) to Germany.The PDF file download is 6.59 Euros . Kindle too ? Dunno.

Fantastic Geoffrey - many thanks!!
Is the hard copy going to change, since Reaper 4 has not been officially released yet? I'd like to get both books as reference guides but preferably reflecting the latest and greatest (well obviously Reaper is being developed constantly so it is always going to be somewhat behind).

Thanks Peter ... the User Guide will of course in time change (such is the nature of REAPER!) but is a pretty solid bedrock of the REAPER 4 upgrade. It certainly won't change before R4 is released AND until after I've had a bit of a break!

How cool is this?!?
I like to download and read manuals before I get software, so I can hit the ground running. I've been holding off on getting Reaper v4 until the official release, at which time I was going to download the manual and get the software after I'd primed myself for it. Now I'll be ready to go as soon as the software is. I have to do a system migration tonight from 3:00 AM until about 10:00 AM, which is pretty much babysitting a process as it does its thing. Now I'll have these books to keep me occupied while I'm waiting.
I've gladly paid for several of Mr. Francis' books and have never regretted a penny of it. I consider it a solid investment, and plan to continue to support his endeavors. Solid knowledge transfer presented in a clear and concise manner at a very reasonable price - who could ask for more?

Nice nice nice work nicholas! Thanks, & also to everyone who worked on it. Cant wait for the version w links.
But... don't let the Reaper 3 Guide gather dust. There are good things in there that (afaict) are not in the guide for 4... as I just discovered when I went looking for info on ReaXcomp, which I'd perviously seen in the 3 guide. (I still have a question about that that I'll ask in another thread.)

Marah, you'll find that the contents have been restructured and reorganised into a sequence that fits in better with the new features, but no significant topic (as far as I can recall) has been taken out.
ReaXComp is at Section 14.16

In asny case... yes there it is... section 14.16.
Sorry! x
