Default Been asked before, but Sidechain...

Is there a really simple way of doing a dance kick drum and sidechain?

Ableton is the simplest of all with a simple switch to put the kick into the sidechain compressor without any real knowledge of routing.. easy.

Is Reaper as easy? I would prefer to use Reaper tbh... but just want to have a kick pumping through a track

It's actually fairly quick in Reaper if you start at the right end.

Creating a send from your "pump in time with this signal"-track to the "to be pumped"-track, and making the target channels be 3-4 on the send, automatically changes the channel count on the target track to accomodate this.

Then it's just a matter tossing ReaComp on the "to be pumped"-track and calling up your "Use the auxillary channels to pump this" preset.

So it's a send and a plugin with a preset.

Ok thanks for your help

I created track 1 with a single kick... to make the pump

I had track 2 with a full track mixdown on it.. and dragged track 1 i/o to track 2 to put the kick on it.

On track 2 opened a reacomp and tried some settings for a fast sidechain. (I still need some specific settings) but is this all correct?

With the right reacomp settings, this would all be set up ok for a sidechain?

Have i done it right in Reaper??

This is exactly what I need, please care to share? or via PM?

I could never get on with routing and get lost very quickly and easily....

1. Go to actions menu, run SWS: Edit console custom commands. In the text editor type
Code:
l4
S Sidechain Router
Save it. Restart Reaper. Now we have two new actions

2. Create new (or modify your current) template project.
Add two new tracks. Call it Sidechain Trigger and Sidechain Router. Put your ghost kick drum on "Sidechain Trigger" track and duplicate it for 7-8 minutes (or more if your tunes are longer). Uncheck master/parent in I/O window. Hide it from TCP and MCP if you want.

Press I/O button on "Sidechain Router" track, click on Receives and choose "Sidechain Trigger" track. Choose 3/4 channels (like you do normal sidechain). Insert your sidechain compressor on "Sidechain Router" track, set it to receive signal from AUX channel. Adjust approx Threshold, Ratio and Release. Hide this track from TCP and MCP if you want. Save your project template

3. Make Custom Action
SWS: Save current track selection
SWS: Run console command S Sidechain Router
SWS/S&M: Copy selected track receives
SWS/S&M: Copy FX chain from selected track
SWS: Restore saved track selection
SWS: Run console command l4
SWS/S&M: Paste receives to selected tracks
SWS/S&M: Paste FX chain to selected tracks

Save it, assign to hotkey/toolbar/menu

Use it and enjoy great Reaper flexibility!

Just installed the latest OS X SWS Extensions from the website (7 March 2012) but can't see the Run SWS?

I am a newbie to all this, but thought you meant Extensions > Reaconsole?

Sorry for being stupid, but could you walk me through this? I am thinking of saving it as my main template and using track templates in future to add sidechain router and trigger as and when i need a sidechain in a track :S

That's well outside of my knowledge, unfortunately. Best of luck to you. Even so, the method you've already come up with is great and demonstrates Reaper's unbelievable flexibility and power. Until 10 minutes ago, I would have thought that instant sidechain setup was crazy talk.

Sorry I've been away but if anyone could talk me thorough this either by PM or on the post?

Would live to have a simple track template to setup using this method. Have installed latest sws on 4.22
Just can't seem to get any further?

Ok so

You need to find the exact action SWS: Edit console custom commands. It should be there. When you run it a text editor will appear, there you will need to type l4 and save it.

Thanks Viente, back at Mac now..

I'm sure I've just installed the latest SWS from the site and the new 4.25

But I must be thick as I cannot find : SWS: Edit console custom commands" at all?

I have searched in Actions and in the Extensions (sws) list?

What am i doing wrong? or am I being stoopid.. ?

AAAHHH that is why then! I wondered if I was just being dim, but on a Mac have looked everywhere for this?!

A "Sidechain ReaScript" would be cool, but will warn you that I don't usually dig that deep into R4 so it maybe have simple steps for a thicky like me to follow!!

Brilliant thanks Viente - looking forward to this, as I always find Ableton much quicker and easier to do sidechain, which isn't much help when your working in Reaper

It really is simple once you get used to it.

I add a kick track and label it "side-chain trigger". i/0 window I deselect the 'master/parent send' box.

Then I add a track I want to have the s-c compression on and in the i/o window of that track I set the track channel drop down box to 4 and then add my compressor to the track.

Then its just a case of dragging the trigger track to the compressor channels.

Only takes a few clicks. You can also do the routing in the routing matrix.

everything works, except my target instrument gets triggered every time the source track plays a note, so I have to explicitly tell the router to not send any midi data:

Decidedly reviving this thread, expecting such a good script could be shared. Now SWS wants me to use the Cycle Action Editor that I have no idea on how to use.

What I think would be great is to stand on the track you want to sidechain, Hit a button, a box asks you from what track you want to take the input and bam. Reacompressor inserted and your track sidechained, 3+4 inputs, without the need for a project template.

As much as I like to help people with REAPER and audio manipulation, and as patient as I am with hand-holding people through methods and procedures, sticking a sidechain on a compressor is a very straightforward task which needs no templates or custom actions:

1) Insert the compressor (ReaComp) on the track you want to be compressed.

2) Decide the triggering input wants to come from somewhere else than it's own input, so switch the detector input to "auxiliary input" (the sidechain).

3) Now all tracks start as two-channel as default, and the comp's aux input will be connected to nothing, or these two channels -not what you want. Click the plugin's routing button (2/4in 2out?) and press the little "+" box to add two more channels to the track -and normally the aux input connects straight onto them (black square= a connection, ok?) -if not click the two aux inputs to 3 & 4 respectively. This is the bit that needs to make sense in your brain. You need an input into this compressor that isn't its own input, so you need an extra line or lines to bring a signal in on (channels 3 & 4).

4) This signal needs to come from another instrument or recording, which is presumably on a different track. On the MCP, just drag a send from that track to the comp's track. Now this signal is dropping straight into the main signal path of your track and the compressor. We don't want this, we want it to go to the compressor's sidechain (aux inputs) and they have been connected to the track's channels 3 & 4. Click on that send, and change the destination channels to 3 & 4 (Audio [1/2] => [3/4]).

You now have a signal path from the Kick (or whatever) to the sidechain of your comp, and it took me about fifty times as long to write this as it does to do it. I often just send one signal from a kick on one line to one aux inut, but as REAPER defaults to stereo everything, it doesn't really matter.

Follow the bits in Bold. I defy anyone with any audio engineering experiience to take more than a few seconds to set this up.

In fact it will take you far longer to set the comp's threshold, ratio, attack and delay up to sound how you want it than it will to make the sidechain connection (here's what templates are for ).

If you can't follow this then you need to read the manual again on routing, and maybe borrow some actual comps and a mixing comsole to see how it's done with wires. If you still can't get your head around it, and especially if you don't have the patience, the maybe sound engineering isn't for you. It can be complicated (this is a very simple procedure), that's why we have engineers to do it. If you just want to be a "producer", then maybe hire a SE to do the difficult bits.

Thanks for your answer, but I think you are missing the point here. It's not about knowing how to do it but about using reaper flexibility to make a one button quick command. Less time for clicks, more for music.

You can do this easily enough. Save a track with Reacomp (or whatever) set to Aux input (3+4) as a track template. Load the template into the SWS Cue Buss generator. Then, create a toolbar button or keyboard shortcut with "create cue buss from track selection, slot x" (where x is the slot you saved the template). You'll have to change the receive from 1/2 to 3/4, so it's actually two clicks, but it's still (slightly) faster than the manual way. You'd have to drag the audio onto the new buss, I guess.

Alternately you could use "apply track template x to track (replace)" and then just drag the i/o from the source track directly onto the reacomp GUI. Three clicks.

...but if you have the track to compress and the track to trigger in there already, you have to include choosing those pointers in whatever you create, and it looks like diminishing returns to me.

It's only six to eight clicks/drags total once you've inserted the compressor. Eight, I've just counted. Seems a bit counterproductive to me, but it's your time

12 seconds, that's my time, care to beat it?
