Looking for free VST drum kit
I'm looking for a free drum kit. Something more of a 60's sound. I've tried Drumica and MT drum kit but just aren't doing it for me, too modern sounding I think. Most other free kits I find are for metal. Preferably VST, my PC struggles a bit with Kontakt.
Is there anything else out there? Thanks for any tips.

You're pretty fussy for somebody who wants something for nothing.

Analogue drums have some great kits, either free or very inexpensive.
I love `em for those moments whn you cant find anything eccentric and rootsy enough elsewhere. Mind you Toon Track have some crackers, but not free...

Try Rayzoon's Jamstix 4 Free version. Just disable the animation of the drum model if you have older machine specs.

Why not. I give away free stuff, so do many others. Works out well that way for everyone. Have you ever done something for someone for free? Try it. Might make you feel good.
Other than that, to the rest of you, thanks a lot for the tips. The Mydrumkit is pretty good, similar to real drums without the overproduced samples.

Yes exactly.
Also, most people are strongly biased in thinking that free things are
worth nothing or are inferior to paid things. But that is simply wrong.

I hear you. Here's another fantastic and most realistic drumkit: naked drums
Features: 1.2 gb flac format, multi-mics drumkit with 10 round-robins,
up to 5 velocity layers and several mic layers - and free!

I assume it's this ancient freebie:
http://www.bluenoiseplugins.com/plug.../beta-edition/
It's pretty punk . Not many velocities though.

Perhaps SM Drums (for Sforzando) might be right up your alley.
You can download Sforzando here -> https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html
Then you can get SM Drums here -> https://smmdrums.wordpress.com/for-sfz-sforzando/
Also, you can look at the thread over at KVR https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewt...?f=42&t=543363 which has a couple of drum libraries for Sforzando.
And as another user said, you can try Jamstix free. For that one, you might need tweak a few settings to make it more stable.

With ReaSamplomatic you could use the samples you like and there are some drum sample deals now, in case you do not have samples

Along with SM Drums, these are the best the Reaper community has to offer.

Thanks for the compliment!
Right "out of the box" it sounds fairly plain, so it does require EQ, compression and mixing in general. In the near-ish future I'll be uploading my mix presets for it too, using native Reaper plugins and JS plugins (so it should work for any OS). Links to download additional JS plugins (any that I use which aren't included in Reaper) will be in the documentation.

I prefer most VIs to be plain/dry. I need lots of room to make the sounds my own.

Ummm sorry I've deleted it and now can't find it either. I can't remember exactly why I deleted it since I've tried many drum kits but think it had some major bugs otherwise I would have kept it. So you likely not missing anything.
I'm currently back with the MT Drumkit which is very reliable and CPU friendly. I only use it to record quick drums and arrange them before I record real drums. That way I don't spend whole day bashing drums until I find style I like.
That said, I'd still like a VST drum kit that would suit my style which is currently 60's rockabilly/rock so as you can see most of the modern drum kits just won't fit that. I did try to sample my own kit but the velocities aren't quiet working out well for me, it still sounds like midi player and for this music it needs to be really "live like". I'll keep working at it, also maybe I'll find something that suits, there is lot of good suggestions here.

Of course, here's a veeery extensive and realistic drumkit,
not as VSTi, but for the free Sforzando-Player:
https://github.com/sfzinstruments/DrumGizmo.DRSKit
740 mb flac (~ 1.2 gigabyte wav)
with whiskers, top + bottom + ambient.
dry kit - for everything from jazz to rock.

I used the tchakpoum kits extensively a few years back & they are all really nice.
I suspect James`s version will be nice, too!

Well, the DRS Kit mentioned in post #17 has "whiskers" that can be used in similar fasion.
Alternatively, there's this brush kit in the following link https://github.com/sfzinstruments/ma...Free/readme.md
which has WAV Files and SFZ for sforzando. However, in my case, sforzando wouldn't recognise the sfz file so I just used the WAV files in ReaSamplomatic.

Does anyone know if Jamstix has brushes or similar?

Jamstix 4 does have brushes, and rods, but I'm not sure if they are part of the core program or if they are add ons. They had a sale last year around Christmas and I got everything they offer, so I'm not sure exactly how they're included.

Thanks Reason.
Is it an easy program to use? Does it use a lot of power?

I haven't measured it, but it runs fine on my I7-6700, and I have plenty of RAM.
There's definitely a learning curve. I wouldn't describe it as easy, because it's got a good amount of options, a lot of which are interdependent, but I'm happy with my purchase.
For example, I'm playing a groove and there's a fill. I don't like the fill but I can't see it to modify it. That's because I'm on the "Groove" tab, not the "Fills" tab. It wasn't hidden from me, I just didn't realize, and it's probably covered in the manual. But it did take time for me to learn that.
There also don't seem to be a lot of videos on youtube for Jamstix 4. There's a 4 part series that totals about 4 hours on Jamstix 3, and I'm sure a lot of the stuff carries over, but 4 had a GUI overhaul so not everything directly translates.
There is a free demo version, that I understand is fairly limited, but I'd definitely check it out to get a feel for if it might work for you.
