Default MIDI overdub issues -- Items?

Hey,

I am definitely a "beginner" level user (a paying one, though!), and that's where I'd like to stay, ideally. You know what I mean.

I'm simply trying to build a MIDI piano part the way we semi-skilled keyboardists soemtimes do -- a series of punch ins, both to "pick up" where I left off (which is often in very subdivisions and not so neat), and, often, to add some additional internal voices to a chord, or whatever, i.e., cheating.

The "Items" paradigm has me confused and frustrated at the moment. It seems that if I set the MIDI input to "Overdub MIDI in Exisiting Items" It won't record past the end of the item. So I can add voices, but not "play on," because recording stops at item's end.

What I want is, simply, "Overdub MIDI" in all items, or regardless of items.

Can someone help me with my thinking here? Thx.

Is your Record Mode (under menu "Options") set to "Auto Punch"? Have you tried setting it to "Normal"?

Yes, I've tried different approaches with all three record mode options
