Default Project Length

How do I set the project length so that reaper will stop playing at bar 50 for example?

You can't directly. You can set REAPER to stop playback at the end of the project though, so if you want it to stop at bar 50, insert an empty 50 bar item.

Or you could use SWS marker actions. That's probably a neater solution.

I have set this for the 1 minute mark but the project keeps playing past it. Is there a setting to stop at the end of project?

The project end is defined by the last item in the project (meaning if the project keeps playing beyond the last item, there's a setting missing in Preferences->Audio->Playback or there's an item (far) behind the last one).

"Limit project length" just seems to limit the scroll range to that value.

If I have a ~3min project open and I set the limit to 10secs, REAPER won't play past 10secs. If I move the cursor past 10sec, it just won't play, although it does make a brief attempt to do so. The setting for 'Stop/repeat at end of project' makes no difference.

Perhaps the OP forgot to check the checkbox?
