simple Piano VST for Linux Reaper???
(SOLVED)
So I was about to, and still might, buy Pianoteq ($150+) which works as a great standalone amazing piano (pianos actually) for Linux, or Windows, or Mac. But I was hoping to save $150 so this morning I was able to get a Kontakt instance with a Native Instruments piano I already had (part of Komplete) on a track in Reaper (using Carla), with JACK as the audio device. I simply saved the Reaper project as 'Piano Practice'. Now when I click the Reaper icon on my Linux desktop, I see Piano Practice as a recent project which I choose and a few seconds later I have a beautiful piano ready to play; Reaper automagically loads the jack server. So I am going to pass on Pianoteq for now, save some cash. Plus I have quite a few different pianos from Native Instruments to choose from. -------------------- I guess I do not really understand what the Linux version of Reaper needs or looks for in terms of a VST. I installed the Linux version of Reaper to MX Linux x64, and I want to see if I can get even a simple piano working in Reaper. I find the whole Linux audio system to a major clusterfrack in terms of the multiple systems, JACK, etc. Maybe Reaper for Linux can help me somehow as a workaround. Is there a simple Piano vst for Reaper for Linux that can use? I normally run Reaper (paid version) on Windows 10, and have so many VSTs from Spitfire, Native Instruments, etc, but I would love to be able to boot into Linux and at least do keyboard practice with a simple piano track in Reaper for Linux. I do not want to have to use WINE because that will cause latency issues.

mda-piano vst will do your job nicely. I'll leave it as an exercise on how to obtain it. I personally have it installed by using the 'kxstudio repositories'

You don't need JACK or anything besides REAPER for Linux to get REAPER working well. Using JACK just makes it more complicated. Use the native ALSA driver, and select your audio device for the inputs and outputs.
And as for a quick way to play a piano in REAPER for Linux, go grab the demo of Pianoteq for Linux here. https://www.modartt.com/try . |

^^^ no (jack) sheeet! I hate JACK! I know I may need to learn it someday but it really makes Linux audio a mega confusing pain in the arse.
^^^ Nice! That Pianoteq rocks! If I have to I will pay for it, but it is something for now to show proof of concept, so I can practice my daily morning piano keyboarding (midi kbd) and songs. Pianoteq was able to run as a standalone application, and I easily figured out how to have it recognize my mini midi and my 61 key midi keyboards, and has so many nice sounds. Then I was able to figure out how to add it as a plugin for Ardour and even record piano into Ardour. But my goal is to get some virtual instruments working in Reaper for Linux. Having piano though in any way, on Linux is a huge step forward.

$ sudo apt-get install kxstudio-meta-all I will have to figure out where the mda-piano vst is located on my MX Linux system.

One of these, most likely:
/usr/lib/vst /usr/lib/lxvst /home/you/.vst In this kvr discussion, there is a dropbox link to a piano for Vital synth, from kvr member photonic, and improved by kvr member jasinski https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewt...68982#p7968982 |

I couldn't find binaries for the VST version of mda piano, or any of the mda plugs. There is an LV2 version (it took some searching to find the link...) in this group of mda plugins:
https://download.drobilla.net/mda-lv2-1.2.4.tar.bz2 There is source code for mda VSTs at SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mda-vst/files/mda-vst/ I have not enabled the kx-studios repo on my machine, I thought all of the plugins in their repo were available as downloads here: https://kx.studio/Repositories:Plugins I don't see the mda plugins listed there at all. They are really good, I've been using them for a long time... I have the LV2 versions and I use them with Carla. Using Carla is not the best solution, but workable. Are VST versions available if I add the repo? |

Yes they are in the repos. If I remember correctly I used the repo .Deb to install the repo, then either search your package manager for ' mda-vst ' or use command ' sudo apt install mda-vst ' .

Thanks, Mikobuntu!
I like those mda plugins! I haven't tried them all yet but I'm groovin' on what I've tried so far: Piano, ePiano and Leslie. No GUI, but they sound great! |

Okay now I am LOVING JACK lol. I figured out how to install the jack daemon and then to use Qjackctl which makes using Jack a breeze. I load Carla as a VST on a Reaper for Linux track then load up whatever vst instrument in Carla and (with Jack set as the Audio device in Reaper) I can use instruments with no observable latency. Jack rocks!

Having said that, if you are looking for a very good piano, VTBuzz has a free one (5GB) in Kontakt and SFZ format which you can use using Carla and LinuxSampler. It works great for me and sounds great. https://vstbuzz.com/freebies/piano-in-162/ |

I know this is not simple but if you already have Kontakt working in Linux then do yourself a favour and download Hammersmith Piano free from Soniccouture. it is 4gb of pure lovely piano goodness.

As far as I know Pianoteq's main selling point is Linux, so you should be able to use it without any problems.
