Default "Codec" needed for my own project to play in WMP?

So I Rendered my own song to save it - and Windows Media Player won't play it. Says I need a "codec" - wtf?

Newby - sorry - I'm learning...

Did you render in Wav-format at 24/32-bit PCM or 32/64-bit floating point? If I recall correctly, WMP didn't like some (or any) of the mentioned formats. Very likely it is also unable to play Ogg, Flac, Wavpack etc...

Just get yourself a decent audio/media player. Even Winamp (in it's current slightly "bloated" state) is WAY better than WMP.

You might need to render / reduce all the way down to 16 bit.

The latest version of WMP should work fine. You may need an update.

Mine can play 24 bit, 48K at least.

it's not a problem of wmp. caused by the soundcard drivers.

I would classify it as WMP's problem even in that case. It should be able to take in files at any sample rate and bit depth and do at least a passable format conversion that makes the audio fit into the installed audio hardware...But I guess that would have been too easy for the user by Microsoft's standards.

yep. it only does this when using wdm drivers. with mme drivers you can only play stuff that the drivers accept.

Quick Time plays it just fine. Interesting that the file was recorded on tape in the studio - burned there to CD - then I made a WAV in the computer - and WMP plays it just fine. But after making mastering-type adjustments in Reaper, and rendering - problem. So it's in the rendering...

OK, so what is this 'codec' anyway?

And, I'll try rendering different settings, just to see what happens.

Thanks for all the replies, G

this "codec" message is bullshit. wmp wants to tell you "hey your soundcard-driver doesn't accept this format and i won't convert it".

if you really need it you can use ffdshow. it can convert the wav to a lower bitdepth in the background ...
