Default The Water Incident

My amp ended up behind the singer by accident Saturday night. Because I was so busy setting up video cameras, I didn't even notice where the amp was because for the first few songs I played my acoustic guitar, which goes into the PA, not the amp. The amp was directly in his ear when I switched to the Gretsch. I tried to move it to get in my ear where it belongs then...

I finished out the tune with water dripping from the guitar and fret board... Sometimes it is the special moments that make life worth living.

30 years of gigging and that's a mistake I just never make but did you see that damn power cable reach out and grab that cup?

Ouch! Thank God no one was hurt or electrocuted. I played a club that actually had a wooden rail around the front of the stage. The singer would put his beer on the railing and one particular time I had turned around for something or another and when I turned back around, my headstock hit his beer. It fell over and rode the rail perfectly about 5 feet, spilling beer the whole way until it finally came to a rest... right over the PA board. SCREAMING HIGHS!!!!!!

It was the cup's fault for being there in the first place.
Did I see a smile on the face of the guitarist to the right? No shame!

Pretty quick man, you almost caught it. That's what you get for doing a show without your drummer.

He was empathetic and told me later how impressed he was that I handled it so well. Had it been my Taylor 814ce just a few feet away I would have freaked the fark out.

Don't let him know that!

Mega cringe on that one! I was banned from having drinks in a previous studio, haha.

I have most of it on video but haven't went through it all yet. If I render out any more I'll post or PM to ya. It was really an off-the-cuff semi-acoustic gig of which we haven't done previously - show up, play the electric set and see what happens.

I saw a YT video a while back where a Midas ProX console got doused by a thrown beer. Made me physically ill for a little while.

Bottled water from now on?

It was an extremely rare event really. I've not had anything spilled on my gear since I began gigging in the 80s as I've always known it was not if but when - It is a good reminder though!!

No B & B so it definitely wasn't rock & roll.

Seriously, we've always tried to follow the "keep it low" method. In other words, drinks stay on or very near the floor. Yes, I've had my share of sticky cables but that's pretty painless really.

Oh that can’t hurt a (passive) guitar! Honestly beer wouldn’t have hurt much either either except it gets sticky and gross pretty quick. If it had gone into the amp...

Notice the f-holes, that was the only concern which I was not worried about because it's a laminate body - I wasn't worried about the electronics either - But... had it been that Taylor right beside and it went in the sound hole, that would have completely sucked because it is all thin/solid unprotected wood on the inside.

If the sticky, wet cables didn't have the occasional shard of beer glass, it also wasn't rock and roll.

The singer did not go for opera-tones, guess he made it!
Thanks for sharing.

I had a gig at the Juke Joint Blues Fest in Clarksdale Mississippi where a we got torrential rain. See the video at 5:20 onward.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tQegFXWGJRs

The footpedal I am holding up to drain the water out of is a $700 guitar synthesizer used for dropping in saxophone lines from time to time. Needless to say, I didn't end up using it that day.

I got it home, took it apart and thoroughly cleaned it with pure isopropyl alcohol and swabs, and left it open for a few days, and it sprang back to life.

Sheer dumb luck that it stll works!

Yeah, I think so. Maybe a 1602. It belongs to my (ex) bandmate.

At least it won't be sticky or smell like a bar.

Someone needs to make something like a cheap "pedal board condom" for "high spillage gigs".

The one in the video is a frankenstrat. But it plays pretty well and works great as a midi controller (when the synth isn't full of water).
