Reaper crackling audio when more than one of the same plugin used simultaneously.
Hi all.
I am mastering some songs. I use mainly the TDR plugins. I have been finding work arounds, but have just hit endgame. Basically, I cannot use two of the same plugin, say the Limiter or Master eq in series without the audio bugging out and crackling.
Running at 4096 samples so that's not the problem. Only running 8% CPU so that's not the problem. Only using 2.5 gig of 12 gig RAM, so that's not the problem.
I should say that the plugins are never both on, it's just that sometimes I prefer the sound of different qualities within the plugin. ie Precise vs Insane.
Even though the plugins are not on simultaneously, they are causing crackling anyway.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds liked you need to run resplendence.com`s latency checker & see whqt it comes up with.
Firstly, do you mean that you have set your Reaper at 42k??? as far as I know only 41 or 48k are available unless you are running super high - like 96k or (gulp) 192k.
Might help if we know what your cpu is, what OS you are running, etc.
Also, WHERE are you placing the two plugins? If it is on the master bus, that could well be the cause of your problem, as it is generally better to place plugins on your final stereo mix on a sub-mix & send the output of that sub to the master.
This is assuming that by "mastering" you mean that you have already mixed and rendered to stereo the tracks that you are working on.

I've found the problem. It's actually the playback engine, not CPU load.
I tested it in Digital Performer as that has a playback meter.
Is there a playback meter in Reaper?
I don't know why, but the plugins are overloading the read/write from the hard disc.
I'll investigate more.

To ivansc.
A typo. 4068 samples, as opposed to 256, 128 latency etc.
I'm running a 12 core 346gig 5.1 Mac. Power is not a problem with this project.
I record at 96.
As you can see from the previous post, I have isolated the problem. The disc is SS but pretty full. I'll try a different hard disc tomorrow.

maybe try Reaper's performance meter (ctrl + alt + p) & check the RTCPU (may need to right click to view all the options)

Hah! I may own a Mac Mini Server, but I am afraid I am pretty clueless when it comes to anything to do with Macs and music.

Dead end. I can see no reason for the crackling/drop outs.
The computer is running at 6-8% CPU. Very high latency(4068 samples), barely using any of the 12 gig RAM.
If I freeze(print) the track in front of where the plugins are causing dropouts, it runs fine. But I shouldn't have to do that.
The computer is running at less than 10%.
People rave about Reaper's efficient use of plugins. That's not what's happening here.
PS I took all plugins off the out bus track, that helped for a very brief period of time.

Try a much lower audio driver buffer blocksize. I haven't had to use even 1024 samples blocksize since ASIO 1.0. Currently I use a blocksize of 64 samples. Sometimes large blocksizes can cause problems, so it's not always better to use a higher blocksize.

I've got insane crackling audio again. I can't play 2 notes on a synth without audio buffer crackles. It's actually not just reaper though as it happens it LIVE and Reason too!
Here's what I done so far:
Spent £150 on AMD graphics card because NVIDA drivers caused latency!! My latency is now low with no problems.
Tried RME fireface UC various buffer settings.
Tried EVO 4 various buffer settings.
I have an i78700k @3.7with 16GB RAM. The audio is going crazy at just 50% CPU. Anyone have any idea of windows settings I can look at? WIN 10 x64.

I would also recommend using a lower buffer size. Some plugins do not like high buffers, try as low as 256 or less if you can just to see what happens. TDR stuff is not light on Cpu. Personally, I get glitchy playback if I use a setting at or higher than 1024, and I have a higher spec machine than you....this is with TDR limiter at the end of the mix session (but before the master track)

Thanks for all your responses. Out of desperation last night, I dropped the buffer to 512, just to see if the problem got worse.
The crackling and popping has improved a lot. It still occurs when I use a few linear phase Reafir eqs.
As they are using a tiny amount of CPU, it doesn't make much sense.
