JACK makes connections without being asked and Reaper vanishes

Hi,

I've got a couple of problems which I assume are Jack based:

I'm finding that Jack is taking it upon itself to make a bunch of connections which I don't want
When I go to connect Reaper to stuff it disappears from the Connections panels.

Those happen in both QjackCtl and Carla.

Do any of you have any idea what's going on?

I think I've sorted it.

Once I've made sure that I've actually corrected my mistakes I'll pop the results here in case anybody else becomes similarly unstuck.

I was being prematurely optimistic but have installed Zorin on a second SSD with Reaper, Cadence, Claudia etc and am not having the same problems.
