Sure, right-click the Grid button in the main toolbar for grid/snap options, change Z-order for gridlines and/or markers.

Am I just an idiot or is the change Z-order option gone from grid/snap settings? Can't seem to find it in 5.40.

There is no such an option for recording, but you could create an FR.
