Default Lock track to avoid editing by mistake

Is there any way to lock a full track so that i can freely edit other tracks within the same timeline without being worried about cutting off portions from another tracks???
In video editing softwares, there are ways to lock layers... DAW should have something like that too.

You can lock track controls, but if you want to prevent editing, you should probably lock the Items on the tracks. There's a checkbox under "Item properties" (F2).

This does not seem to affect the envelope points beneath the item. Is there a way to lock those as well?

I've tried turning on Track Envelopes from the Lock icon in the toolbar, but it's still not giving the expected behaviour.

I would like in this case to be able to move my dialog tracks without affecting either the position or envelope points of my music track. Why are the items after the locked one not moving in ripple-all mode?

In your preferences>editing behaviour> Looked Item ripple edit behaviour. Select a different one.

Don't know if I understood u right but
turn off ripple edit or put ripple edit per track to leave The music track alone when you move the others.

Thanks for the reply danniellumertz. I changed my "Locked item ripple edit behaviour" to "Locked items interrupt ripple per-track", which got me half way ...

But, as you can see, if you move an item which overlaps with an envelope point, the envelope point moves even though it should be locked ... which then deletes all of the envelope points if you move an item to overlap with it.

This is just a demo arrangement. In reality I am encountering this when adding intro music to a podcast after I have finished editing. Usually this means I have to zoom all the way out, and do a huge marquee-select on every item except for the theme music, and move them all using ripple per-track mode. If I could properly lock the music items or the whole track then I could use ripple all-tracks which would be a lot easier.

You have to turn off, [Move envelope points with media items] at toolbar

EDIT But this will prevet to move envelope under your voiceover tracks, can you show a gif of a real project and showing what you want to do? I think that is easier ways to do than this way.

why dont just select the first item of every voiceover track with ripple edit on and move?
and whats the problem with the marquee ( maybe seeing your real project I get it ... )
maybe grouping item, them they move together

Yes that is a problem.

Because I have a lot of items and tracks which don't all start at 0:00 --

I like to do all of my editing first, then add the intro music, and drag the speech to the right point on the intro music. But as I've shown, it breaks the envelope. Maybe I want to move some of the music later in the show as well.. then I need to zoom way out and marquee select everything, change to per-track, and un-click the items I don't want to move. It's awkward.

I appreciate your suggestions, thank you.

hm, I think that using the marqee and/or ripple edit per track is the easier way. In my opinion. it seems very good an intuitive to me as a way to do it actually...

but, if you really want to use the method with ripple edit all tracks. Maybe this:

copy the music volume envelope
turn on the ripple edit.
Move
paste the envelope over

or alternative is to copy the whole track before and paste it after the edit.

I can think in other alternatives also involving scripts, but I would still think the marquee in your case is a really good way... the tracks are organized to select and move so making the marquee is just like what 5 seconds?

It's still very unintuitive that you can't lock a track completely, don't you think?

Yeah. The hard lock of projects/tracks/items/etc has been requested https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=2186917 for quite some time now.

Indeed, and it can be useful to prevent erroneous delete, while the track still available for editing parameters

To avoid inadvertent editing you can hide the track using track manager

AS I told " while the track still available for editing parameters" it means still visible.
This is the goal.

Just a suggestion: you could save your track as a template including items and envelopes, then it wouldn't matter what you did with the 'live' track; just reload the template.

Ok but this is just a workaround.
Protecting tracks from deletion is way more effective.
As it's possible for single items, it should be possible for whole tracks

Beside the validity of what you suggested, there is some impracticability I spotted and I would like to avoid. hence my FR.
