Default What? No More Updates on V4 Beta????

It seems we've been on the latest release for a bit (alpha27b) so I was wondering if this was "IT" and nothing new except fixing and testing ;-)

Just thought I'd make some noise about it all

I have to seek help for the amount of times I have checked landoleet

Having such regular updates and then having them take longer is classic pavlovian conditioning!

Evil cockos!

Maybe the devs are just taking that Christmas/New Year holiday that they clearly didn't have at the time!

...or maybe we're in for something big!!!

hoping we are about to pass from Alpha to Beta stage. There's been some GREAT work on v4 over the past month and a half....given that Reaper has such a constant development paradigm, I'd really like to see the "v4 process" move on to the next stage.

I'm also ready to buy a new license....just waiting (not so patiently) for the v4 release :-)

with an enormous amount of unhealthy greed I must disagree. Why move on past mass feature implementation stage (aka alpha)?

I'm kidding of course.

it takes as long as it takes.

you can either do things right, or do them quickly.

(personally, I'm guessing the default theme will need to be finalized before the beta phase begins)

I selfishly disgree. That's because I'm broke at the moment and can't renew my license just yet.

but I believe your membership date in the forum is from about 3 months ago. So statements about how to do things or how not to do things with regard to development pace might be better received from someone who's been around the block here for several years.

After watching the passage from v1 to v2 and thence to v3, this is (by far) the longest alpha stage development on a large version number (which is a good thing on the whole, of course). These developers are awesome and continue to develop and implement both large and small features into the program regardless of version "number" size. Updates are almost constant...and that pace has not changed since I was so fortunately introduced to the program five months shy of four years ago.

I'm (notice I'm speaking for me, not anyone else) just hoping we move into beta before we've been actively troubleshooting v4 alpha for almost a quarter of a year.

Even though you're response isn't related to anything I've said, I've took offense at it: How does someone's length of membership on a forum have any bearing on what they may or may not know about software development or what the best way to approach it is? For all you know, they may be far more qualified and experienced in such matters than yourself. Length of membership doesn't make you an expert in anything. And just because they joined 'only' 3 months ago doesn't mean they haven't been using Reaper since version 1 does it? And even if they haven't, they're free so have a view. Seems like quite a rude response to me.

Anyway, sorry for the rant - it's just the mood I'm in today!

The first alpha of 3.0 (called 2.99 back then) was available November 15 2008, the first alpha which was actually called 3 came January 6 2009. The first beta end of March 2009 (so we had a good 1+1/2 month longer than a quarter of a year in alpha). Release of V3.0 was May 22 2009. Time flies in hindsight, doesn't it?

I think we're nicely in schedule, no need to rush at all .

The poster's post took issue with my point even though I was EXCEPTIONALLY clear that my original post was ONLY a personal opinion. Its tone (to me) was that I didn't understand a basic fact - that it's not done until it's done.

That's what I took exception to and why I posted a response.

Last point - no matter what the expertise of anyone...basic tact and manners would dictate that a different tone would be taken. How about something like: "Hey, understand your post, but in my opinion the timeline shouldn't be pushed. I'd like the devs to be really happy with the alpha stage of progress before moving to beta."

That response would be both polite as well as not tell me that my opinion wasn't a valid one.

Looking back, unless you really dug, that first alpha really wasn't being worked on publicly until the January 6th date/version (as you mention), and we were firmly into beta testing in March (perhaps the end, as you mention), so we were "into" beta testing before a quarter of the year was over. When I came home from my year in Iraq on April 4, 2009, we were fairly close to working release candidates (of course, I could be remembering those end dates incorrectly). But no more than a quarter of a year from public alpha to last betas/impending RCs is what I'm hoping for. That was my original point, we went to public alpha on this one a good five weeks earlier (datewise in the year) than v3 - i.e. the Alpha 1 was VERY public and everyone was "in the game" on December 1. I'm just hoping we get to RCs, etc. by March so that we can at least match that timeline.

In the end, it's all good - I just think they've done some phenomenal stuff with this version already (especially for those of us audio types who've been waiting for takes/comping upgrades/etc. for some time now). I'm an "A-type" kind of guy...so I'm ready to send Cockos some more money and be good through 5.99. I can certainly wait to do that, but I was just "opine-ing" that I'd love to see it move to Beta in the "somewhat" near future.

If ReaEQ gets a spectrum display, I might actually be able to stop using the Timeworks EQ I got many many years ago. Add some *real* brickwall limiting to ReaComp (where it actually holds the line at the db level you set), and I could begin to think about retiring CompressorX as well. For now though, I can't do without those two FX even if they are getting on in years and DX based effects to boot.
