Default Video cababilities in latest Reaper test versions on Linux

I am using 5.963dev1205 and trying to edit video I have converted in Handbrake to be editable in Reaper.

https://flathub.org/apps/details/fr.handbrake.ghb

The source is 50fps 1080p .MTS sony camera. The computer is an i7 desktop.

At the moment I am converting to constant frame rate 25fps .m4v:

Video: 1920x1080@25.00fps, Aspect=1.00, Decoding format=I420/YV12
Audio: 48000Hz 2ch 32bps

Using ffmpeg/libav DLL decoder v58.18.100
Video: h264 (Main) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 18046 kb/s
Audio: aac (LC) (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp, 160 kb/s

Is this a good video format to feed Reaper? I am getting:

Render Timings 61%, 0%, 70%, , 61% (average 491%)

and the video has a lot of green screen pausing and won't loop properly. The loop just ends up all green.

Should I expect to be able to edit a 1080p h264 video at 25fps OK in Linux right now? Could I use a different format for the conversion to get it working? Lossless? I can use FFMPEG command line to convert, or Handbrake accepts x264 settings. Cheers!

would be worth trying to edit on specific "editing formats" that are usually bigger file size but easier to handle for nle s like apple pro res LT or HQ and the likes. these are intra frame codecs designed for that purpose. how this performs with reaper I have not tried yet...

If I'm not wrong Handbrake uses ffmpeg/libavcodec as a backend and the same goes for Reaper. So whatever ffmpeg is capable of, should be good for Reaper and Handbrake. Also the x264 encoder package is available in most distros repos (and x265 too) which is/are also needed.
