Default Cheap Regular Keyboard or MIDI Keyboard Controller?

Hi all,

I just moved to the US and I don't have all my instruments with me. I'm looking for a keyboard to record some MIDI tracks (mainly bass, piano, drums) on simple projects. I'm on PC and use Komplete Audio 6 as my interface.

I was wondering if you could recommend some cheap keyboards, ideally with MIDI out. I do it for fun and not professionally so nothing fancy is needed. I'm just tired of manually writing the MIDI parts with my mouse.

Cheerio,
P.

M-Audio is IMO the best tradeoff between price and quality on the cheap end. Mine's still going after 10 years of abuse. I think it was about $100 for 49 keys.

But if you check thrift stores, you can sometimes score some cheap Casio or similar, which usually have MIDI out.

If 25 keys is enough you won't find cheaper 5 pin midi than a Rockband Keyboard.

Thanks for the inputs. I'm still unsure if 25 keys will be enough, but I would've never thought of the Rockband keyboard. Maybe I'll give it a try since it's so cheap and give it to a kid if it's unusable.

I find 25 keys a bit cramped, but it's good enough for laying out simple lines and will fit on your desk. You'll want more if you plan on playing much with both hands.

If you find 25 keys to be too small, go with the nektar 61. I bought it about a year ago and I find it to be great for price and quality.

Here's a resource I found when googling.
