My computer reboots now and then
Hi,
Anyone have this issue that your computer restarts now and then without doing stuff or mixing some. I have test tons of Linux distro's and on every single one of them reboots my computer anytime, can sometimes be ok a day or two, and then 3, 4 times the same day. Today I installed default Windows 10 and so far everything is ok. I will test with Windows a few days and see IF there is same rebooting thing. I have run all diagnostics and not a single error. Lenovo IdeaCentre 520 ALL-IN-ON (16GB) ram and 250GB SSD

I've been running Xubuntu on my DAW for a little more than a year now, starting it up every morning around 8:00am and leaving it running till after midnight every evening. I've not seen any sporadic behavior or random reboots. I jump in and out of REAPER, Firefox, Thunderbird, GIMP, Stellarium, Google Earth, and a bunch of other programs. Every bit as stable for me than any version of Windows.

The distro I haven't tried is Ubuntu. I give Windows a chance for couple of days, and see how it turns out.

Two of them are dedicated servers that run 24/7, one is an Asus laptop, the the last one is my wife's desktop machine that is on every day for hours on end doing Facebook, desktop publishing, games, and other tasks. You might search for your exact Lenovo machine and Linux to see if there are any known issue with that specific hardware. For me Xubuntu 18.04 is stable as a rock on five different machines. |

Did you change the default settings for updates? I've noticed in a number of distros that the preference involves automatic download and install things that are considered security updates. Also I noticed sometimes the software sources include things like backports. I change those settings; it's the first thing I do after the install of the distro. I don't mind getting notifications of updates but I don't like anything installing automatically.
Anyway maybe that has something to do with it. Also check your power manager settings. I guess that's probably the second thing I change after installing the distro. I've been running various distros for about a year and I don't think my computers have restarted on their own. Last edited by JamesPeters; 11-02-2019 at 06:05 PM. |

Thanks guys. I investigate more if I can find anything weird about my computer and Linux. I have two old laptops, one Dell Latitude E610 with 8GB Ram, and one HP Elitebook also with 8GB ram. Very old, say 6 years maybe. Never had any problem with those two.

I don't think that's normal. IMO it points to some hardware issue, or possibly a driver problem for some hardware in your system.

Using W10 all day and the computer behaves as it should. Not a single reboot or other strange things. The fan is also very quiet. Can hardly hear it. I did a test now in Reaper and loaded up at least 10 instances of SForzando and Sonatina soundfonts and a loads of reverbs/delay/eq/compressor and the performance meter goes not over 10%. The load is absolutely perfect.
I do some more tests with LinuxSampler and other instruments. I don't have many to choose from so I use what I have. But still, there's a big different...so far. I'm waiting for the big REBOOT. I shall now build a big Template I found (Mattias Westlund). I don't see all the tracks but its over 300 I think. Then whole ensemble of Sonatina via Linuxsampler and reverbs and other effects and we see how it all works.

If you are computer savvy, you might want to open it up and reseat the memory modules. This has helped with many computers over the years. Maybe linux uses the memory differently than windows and hits an iffy memory location that causes it to crash.

The most "gently" distro I tested is Xubuntu. It took a day or so before it rebooted by itself. Is as you say, something with the hardware and Linux, because it works flawless with W10 so far. I give it one day or two just to see how it goes, then back to Linux. I really don't like W10. Been a Linuxuser for almost 15 years now.

besides overheating - - check syslog ? track the reboot why?
or - - etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades I had set Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot "true" [CHANGE THIS TO FALSE - - ] ... some earlier ubuntus did this.. Check /proc/sys/kernel/panic, if it's value is 1 then immediately reboot on panic. Bad drivers can cause kernel panic..? just a few crazy ideas... gl |

Ram allocation Win vs Linux - https://www.fossmint.com/linux-vs-windows-ram-usage/ or https://www.ukessays.com/essays/engi...management.php
I remember a few years ago I had a little trouble with the 'swappable' ram in linux. (the allocation was too high - I lowered it and that fixed it) I imagine not enough might trigger reboot maybe - my last idea might be that the VRAM chips on the mobo might be getting a little warm (right next to the cpu) adding a little fan on it. If your windows is running real quiet, it seems to point to power/heating management. |

Thanks s wave. I save your advice for later test. I do some more "heavy" tests today. I have OTR Template For Reaper so I dont have to do build it. Never had this problem with other computer. They all have been Dell Latitude of different models.

..also run "sudo mcelog" after crash/reboot or enable the mcelog daemon and check the logfile.

I found some tweaks for Linux Mint XFCE and so far, not a single reboot since yesterday.
I followed everything that was for XFCE https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/1.html

Rosa Image Writer seems to work on everything I've thrown at it and use it as portable, only thing is it needs to run as the sudo/rootie thingie, but hey.
https://neon.kde.org/download Ps, your reboot issue is news to me though, hmm.
