reaVerb - Very Frustrated, Please help ...

In this video he selects 'File' and then selects a file called 'Flat Plate'. Only problem is, as far as I can tell, he does not say where to find these files.

When I go to add 'File' it takes me to the windows explorer to find the Windows directory wherre the files are located. BUT, as mentioned, nowhere in this video does Kenny say where to find theser files.

Do the files he is using come with Reaper? If so, where the hell are they?

If not, he does not say in this video or in the description where to download them from!!!!!!

How is anybody who has never used this plugin supposed to know if the person in the video does not say?

I did a search of my entire PC and got nothing!!!! So frustrasting!!!!!!!!

They don't come with Reaper (which does not know what sound you might like) .

There are thousands of such "impulse" files around.

I have a windows 10 64-bit PC. On the website for the Samplicitty IRs is is not exactly clear which file I should download.

Ideas?

The first or second in the list depending if you work at 44.1 or 48k in Reaper.

Look at these install instructions for BIG Gee's IR files that Kenny says he is using:

SPACE DESIGNER INSTALL

1) Put Big Gee's Lexicon 480L folder in :
Library / Application Support / Logic / Impulse Responses

2) Put BG Lexicon 480L folder in :
Library / Application Support / Logic / Plug-In Settings / Space Designer

So, in Reaper, where do I find this directory paths that they are talking about? Or, do I have to create one?

Information is incomplete. For someone who has never used this plugin before, without full information it makes it hard to use!

Can anyone see what I mean about the frustration of only having partial information?

You can put the impulse responses where you want, they're just wave files.

By the way, Reaper does come with some impulse responses, but they're not reverbs: they are amp+cabinet IRs (in C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64)\InstallData\Data\amp_models, on Windows).

Those are instructions for using the IR in a different plugin on a different DAW on a different operating system so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise the paths do not exist.

Just put the files wherever you want....could be in your my documents folder....could just be a new impulses folder on the c drive. It really doesn't matter as long as oyu can find them.
Now when you click on file in Reaverb you browse to that folder and select one. Then they will all become available in the drop down menu just to the right.

You know, it applies to all software no matter what it is for, it amazes me so often how software developers tend to leave out such critical yet basic information about how to install their software. I do get it that they will never be able to give instructions for all situations. I'm talking about instructions for the most common ones used. Bit and pieces of important information is simply missing!

Nowhere, it's your choice: you can work at 44.1kHz or 48kHz (or many other sample rates, but that's a debate for another thread).

Audio for video is usually at 48kHz, CDs are at 44.1kHz so usually music is like that as well. Many audio interfaces are "native" at 48kHz (or so I read somewhere many moons ago).

You should see 44.1kHz or 48kHz in top right corner of Reaper. I'd guess you're set 44.1k.

I am using the IRs mostly for vocals. I realize I can try them all and it is subjective on the part of each person and their purpose and tastes, BUT, is there anyone out there who can offer suggestion of ones that you like using with vocals ?

I sing mostly songs either easy listening or in the POP genre..If that makes a difference ....

I'd suggest starting with the plates, considering the songs you've mentioned covering previously. Try A plate and the rich vocal plates.

+1 on the Samplicity IR responses

I keep my IR files in the Reaper resource folder. I made a subfolder named "Reverb IR". I suppose it might be more consistent (like plugin installs anyway FWIW) to put them somewhere that feels more like a resource to your OS than a resource to specifically Reaper if one is OCD about such things. YMMV but it doesn't matter in the end.

EQ is your friend with reverb. Use pre and/or post reverb. Band pass to taste. Pull out anything that gets in your way and so on. Feels like cheating or something.

You can insert ReaDelay as well if you want to hear your ambience delayed some.

As far as the IR sample files' sample rate...
The most "damaging" (ie most prone to artifacts) sample rate conversions are lower res to lower res (anything going from 48k to 44.1k). But you kind of need a ringer example as it were to even hear anything with that on a full mix. I don't think anyone is going to hear squat from a sample rate conversion on your IR file! Card carrying (not really) member of the audiophile police here who works in HD whenever possible and this is fully a non issue.


Demo a few IR's for whatever you're working on that needs ambience. Pick the one that sounds the best. Slap on eq before or after it (or both) and dial in to taste. Sound like what you had in your head? Perfect!

(You could probably sample rate convert that back and forth 10 times and not hear anything altered in any way.)
