I think the theme engine really needs to be made simpler.
Rainmeter is nigh on perfect and is extensible via scripting. In its basic form it is powerful enough to allow simpletons like me to create good themes, even with varying layouts. Easy to rearrange, resize, add or remove items. Reaper is extraordinarily difficult to even identify what things are in the ini file.

@ AugerJ:
posting many change requests so close together is counter-productive.
It is usually more beneficial to post 1 or 2 issues that are most important to you and wait for a response before posting more.

then there'll be no need for corresponding dot-spots either.
This theme is an analog or hardware styled theme and the 'dot-spots' represent LEDs.
They are part of what gives this theme it's character.
While the LEDs could be slightly brighter for better noticeability, the I/O button design looks pretty good to me the way it is.

you will likely be able to choose your own color for the track 4 issue and it looks to me like "Attack... Release..." on track 6 is like that because the FX is bypassed or offline.

it's an 'S'.
Fives generally have hard angles on the top and middle left sides.
I think the font look great for this theme.

(I guess I'll end up with two Cycle buttons. Why not?)
The button with the circle is the record button.
The loop or 'cycle' button has not been revealed yet.
The buttons are all the same size and shape, so it should be easy enough to re-order them to you liking with minimal code changes on your part.

What I'm saying is I don't see the need to make special colors for record armed tracks meters.
It's to help indicate the track is armed.
You can change this in any theme to make it stay the same whether it's armed or not.
Alternatively, you can created a custom record meter with with yellow or white to indicate the area between say '-6' and zero to help you know how when you gone too hot or are getting close.

Well, I wasn't calculating.
What had come to my mind - I let it out.

Thanks for your advice to talk about one or two issues at a time though.

Thank you guys for all of your posts. The unreadable colors on the screencap ARE because of either offline/bypassed states, and/or because of the 'user's' poor/dark color choice, the user here being me. I am processing all data and will update asap. Right now my update is this:

1. Updated transport buttons with illuminated active state.
2. Updated ALL knobs with illuminated sweeping rings.
3. THE TCP IS NOT THE DESIGN FOR THIS THEME.
4. Updated FxParam levels with vertical 'meter' style controls.
5. Updated MCP Volthumbs. How about these?
6. Showing viable item backgrounds in arrange area.
7. Item Volknobs will be 'iris' style.
8. New Def Transport design. There are like 6 style, 3 docked/3 floating.
9. Viable toolbar icon designs, all items that are medium cyan will
be desaturated to the lighter cyan, to match the color of the text on the transport
and MCP.

Other updates I am forgetting right now.
I cannot stress enough---IGNORE THE TCP.

What do you guys think of the changes?

These look good.
Don't have the time right now to say much else, except this: looking forward to see the development of this theme )

Hi Never,

IMO, great update! B)

You have a cool original / style but it’s still somehow classic! Something new yet comfortable...

Love the toolbar icon design (great color), transport, knobs, faders, vertical FX parameter meter (didn’t know this was possible!), The media items pop!

I like how the ext mixer looks like it is a full-fledged part of the mixer panel!

I’ll let you and your ‘dev team’ fight over the nuts and bolts and minutia! Democracy in action B)

Keep up the good work! I look forward to watching this develop...

(one of which was not an idea, but a transmutation of another theme),
and I did not like the response on any of my threads for these ideas.
It just seemed like there was not enough interest to keep working.
In the case of my favorite of the themes, 'Quantum', I was getting feedback
like 'Too hard on the eyes', 'Too busy', etc., So I gave up working on
all of these themes and trashed them along with the already finished 4 themes
that are now old and defunct and too outdated to ever upload for fear of shame,
lol. However, I recently got in a theming mood and started working on a new theme,
and I have too much done to quit. I want to work on it while there is ongoing feedback
and FR's in the thread, so I can tailor it to the needs of the many. I will take FR's
that are not super involved, unless it is something that the theme just cannot do
without, then I will try to execute it no matter the difficulty or time consumption.
I have noticed a trend within the last 2-3 years for themes to be primarily 'flat'.
I absolutely love the work that has been done in this regard, and am thinking of adding
'flat' layouts to this theme, but right now, they are but a fleeting thought.
(Maybe when I am closer to finalizing things.)

Having said that, I want to say that the feel of this theme
is admittedly 'throwback'....and since I feel I am releasing
a throwback theme, and since we are within the realm of music,
I thought it clever to call the theme:
'REAPRISE'. The theme uses the 'Rea' prefix for REAPER that so many
themes used to adorn in the hayday of v3 and v4 theming.

I have created (or started to create), a theme that is simple, largely dark.
It is a medium-sized theme and should be viewable on smaller monitors,
Large monitors and TV's (1080p), I am creating @ 1920x1080 on a 32" screen
with another 23" screen running @ 1600x1200 and am forcing things to respond
well to resolutions well below the latter. I do not have 4k functionality.
In the layout menu I will list the screen resolution requirement of each
layout where it may apply. I also plan on having actual global layouts in this theme.

Please tell me what you think and help guide me to make this a theme I can
be proud of, and one that people will actually use from time to time.
Give me advice, examples, criticism, FR's, etc.
I will not get upset at criticism or dislikes, and I will not ignore
suggestions or FR's. Thank you all in advance for everything and I look
forward to working with you in the near future. I will take request for
advance builds for BT purposes when the theme is a bit closer to not being
an eyesore as a whole. The TCP is not started at all.
Here is the work I have done so far:

Full screen transport, full screen mixer, no icons

Left anchored, scaleable transport, full screen mixer, with icons

Floating compact transport, full screen mixer, icons, unfinished medium sized ch. strip, alternate 'iris-style' fxparm knobs, alternate fader caps

All screencaps feature current default mcp layout, tracking layout,
VCA layout, VCA w/ fader layout.
All recording related buttons on the default layout except for 'recarm'
itself are hidden until 'recarm' is clicked. (Cleanliness).
I am using frameshift on the name backgrounds (5 Panel), for normal,
parent, child, last, record.
There are two instances of fxparm knobs, the 'horizontal-bar' type,
and the contracting-expanding 'iris' style box. There is no actual knob
for send boxes yet just the two-part meter. There are a few other doo-dads
here and there, I would like your input for all facets of this product.
I will post updates with fixes, changes, and new layouts asap and wont
disappear. This theme will be finished and posted, so your input will
not be given in vein.

Thank yous all-around!

Haha no.
I wanted a short user name years ago and most were taken. Couldn't think of a good one that was available, so I used my car reg number! It started with L23 so I put an s in front to make up the minimum required characters! I just stuck with it
Lol

Damn good theme btw! Looking really amazing!

It will be free for all at the stash, no donation required.

I think my next theme may be flat, however, this one being pseudo 3d or skeu,
is kind of a throwback, but then I saw this article and it gave me hope that
these types of UI design aren't totally dead; There is a bunch of great and free
UI design stuff on the site too. Here's the headline:

Skeuomorphism is dead, long live skeuomorphism!!
-------------------------------------------------------
Skeuomorphism has been a very useful concept in design, then it became the most hated concept in design, and then it came back from the dead.
-------------------------------------------------------
(Continued on the link):

https://www.interaction-design.org/l...-skeuomorphism

-------------------------------------------------------

It also has these great reference links:

Check the IDF course on Affordances: https://www.interaction-design.org/c...ser-interfaces

The BBC takes a long look at the history of skeuomorphism in devices - http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-22840833

This site is awesome....every designer should check it out. And I am in no way affiliated with them or plugging them in conflicting interest, just the interest of design.

Default Which splash?

So, this is petty, and most users will never utilize it, but I did it so I will include one. I like to get all the little ticky-tacky stuff out of the way first when I am doing a theme, like the splash, the item buttons, general thumbs and knobs, etc.,
because if I get all the good stuff done first, I won't want to do this stuff.

Ver A

Ver B

Ver C

Ver D

Yes, that is the Cockos v2 Grim Reaper reworked alotwise lol.
The splash is just the 'R', a transparency, with an extra 20px of space at the bottom
for REAPER to add an info/progress strip, or whatever you call it.

@Never: well I never! Haha the numbers game funny at times

you're talk of a flat theme.
Whilst awaiting the completion of yours, I decided to mess about with my current, which is janne theme edited, then edited again by star chaser. My edit is a complete graphical change where everything is plain. But I need some help with buttons. How do I remove the background so just the icon is shown? Is there a way to do that?

you're talk of a flat theme.
Whilst awaiting the completion of yours, I decided to mess about with my current, which is janne theme edited, then edited again by star chaser. My edit is a complete graphical change where everything is plain. But I need some help with buttons. How do I remove the background so just the icon is shown? Is there a way to do that?
On which icons/buttons, what element are you talking about....maybe the toolbar icons??? Let me know or post a screencap showing what you have and what you want to accomplish....

I think maybe I know....you wish to take something like the phase button...and remove the button so your left with only the phase symbol...which we will hereafter refer to on all buttons , toolbar icons, etc....as the 'GLYPH'.
I can help you with this. Start a thread entitled 'Customizing Buttons & Icons'
and we will get into it more.

It is much easier to recreate...and it will be a much better quality to recreate...
what software are you using to edit image files...if you want to theme, it would behoove you to have the following, and this is nothing more than a suggestion:

1.Photoshop, Gimp, Paint.NET (My personal suggestions, and in the order of my personal desirability)(One of these or another complex image editing app is absolutely necessary)
2.Inkscape is also a good image editing app, if you plan on working with vector or 3d
images. (Not necessary)
3.JKnobman,Knobman or at least use Webnobman (Again ranked by personal desirability)(These apps are used to make the stitched .png animations [knob stacks])
4.Using Knobman3d & Skinman are also useful (But not necessary, and these apps have a fairly steep learning curve, experience with jKnobman, Knobman, WebKnobman helpful here.)
5.It is very helpful to have 'Ruler for Windows' to measure pixels.
6.It is great to have a REAL text editor like Sublime Text or Notepad+.

If you are using some other software not listed, I may not be able to help much beyond basics.

-----Documents------(Again in my personal order of necessity)
7.Always have a browser open to the SDK and have these two pages open: REAPER_WALTER.htm & REAPER_Theme images.htm. You will constantly refer to them.)
8.Download the .PDF from White Tie: HOWT_WALTER_Themer's_Guide....Study it...
9.Download the document from White Tie: WT_Power-Of-Pink..Study it more...
10.All the stickies at the top of the color themes forum concerning making a theme, using a theme, and common tweaks to a theme.

Hi Never,

Thanks for the reply and indeed the offer of help
Really appreciate it.

Yes I suppose GLYPH is a good a term as any.
I will indeed start a new thread, but first, the answers to your questions...

1. I don't have photoshop. Looked at GIMP many times over the years and it's a bit too much for my needs. I took another look yesterday and it's a bit daunting trying to learn that! So my choice has always been Paint.Net.

2.I've had Inkscape for many years, but again never used it as it's a bit too much. I was mainly intent on only using this app for one thing, but tbh, I could probably do away with it and use PDN. I made a mod mockup of the electribe EMX1/EMS1 hybrid and sent to Korg in the hope they might add some of the features. I made the mockup in 2005 using Serif DrawPlus v5. I wanted to redo it but never got around to it!

3. I have used Knobman in it's various guises for making knobs for MuLab. Very easy to use for basic stuff, can get complex though. I made some nice Korg electribe first gen knobs in black that are transparent. They work quite well.

4. Never used Knobman3D or Skinman. But 3D isn't what I'm after, just plain, flat n simple graphics.

5. Hmm, think I had this, will have to check. Is this it? I have it.

6. My text editor of choice for many years is SynWrite. It is a fully fledged programmers Notepad, though I'm only a pretty basic user of it really.

7. Not sure what you mean by having a browser open to the SDK? The two pages, which are they exactly?

8. Already have it.

9. Already have it.

10. What did you want me to do about the stickies? Open them in Tabs or read them? Already read them.

I must point out that all I am attempting is to redesign the icons for all buttons, ie, the GLYPH's. Not to recreate a theme. Saying that, there are some minor adjustments I would like to make to the theme.

Ok. I will now start a new topic and await further instructions

Thanks again for your tremendous generosity in offering to help

The more I see of this theme, the more I want to add things from it to my own

Would it be ok to copy some of your ideas Never?

Never I just wanted to drop in and say it's extremely gracious of you to do all this work and offer themes for free. I have no issues donating for all things Reaper (in fact I have donated to Blankfiles & Albert for their themes and would again.) Please accept my gratitude for the work you do and for making it free.

I’m with @emwhy 100%. I’ve donated to other “theme designers” too and since you declared that this theme will be free take my gratitude for your hard work. It seams like that my default theme is going to change as soon as you will release this masterpiece!

Your more than welcome to borrow. Part of the unspoken manifesto of the stash is that
the work is there to borrow from. I am almost done with the TCP so it will be ready soon.

@emwhy, @Diego:
Thank you for your support. I will try to add a donate link when I post the completed version. However, I will not require a donation to download.
I am almost done with the TCP, so it won't be too much longer for a BT build.
