sf2 player for linux
Hi there,
I know that there are some workarounds, like using win-version under wine, or carla. But I wonder if there is a simple solution to play soundfonts native on linux like with the bassmidi.vst for win. I am using (Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS) and I would prefer a simple vsti solution... |

There are several native Linux ways to play soundfonts. SFZero, Carla, and LinuxSampler are a few that can do it.

@wogda:
A 32 bit soundfont workaround with a beautiful gui, and excellent capabilities exists. Simple to use in Reaper, and a standalone should be possible using Tone2 Nanohost. https://rekkerd.org/frettedsynth-rel...ndfont-player/ https://rekkerd.org/bin/frettedsynth/SafFronSE.zip https://www.tone2.com/nanohost.html Semantically speaking, every piece of software is a 'work-around' of some sort. Linux purists have a history of objecting to the use of $commercial products that are closed source, and so a bias creeps in to the musician community language. I really doubt linux Reaper would even exist had it not been shown how well the windows version worked in wine. Linux Bitwig came from a region that dabbled heavily in using linux in government settings. Linux Harrison Mixbus, is a derivative of linux Ardour, and windows Mixbus followed later. Linux for musicians is indeed a huge and complex workaround, rewarding as the case may be. On the non-simple extreme, there is a commercial workaround for playing samples and soundfonts that works in linux, called Kontakt, I use it a lot, while wine just sits in the shade like a well-fed toad. I'm running Ubuntu 19.10
Yet another native solution is Bliss sampler from DiscoDSP. https://www.discodsp.com/bliss/ When I bought it, it was $149 Now it's $99 I have used it to play the following library types: .EXS / .SFZ / .SF2 (SoundFont2). It's supposed to play Akai S5000/S6000 sounds, but I never tried that... It has a solid native-format library, I think it's around 700-800 Gb. It is commercial/closed source, and I want commercial devs to port their products to Linux, so I purchase their Linux-native products. I also bought Renoise Redux, https://www.renoise.com/products/redux/ but I don't think it plays soundfonts. It's a pretty cool plugin though, it has a lot of features beyond sampling, and a good native library. |

Bliss is great for sampling the occasional cpu killing preset from U-he Bazille/ACE/Diva/Repro or the competition.
