Yeah, I see no need for prizes since it must be surely rewarding to be voted as fav of the month in public on a forum like this amongst people with similar 'hobby.
So no, money is not my carrot either.

Ps, prefer chocolate.
Ps2, Also, this is relatively new, think people wont show up late in the future per automatic if they can help it. (nice theory)

Do you guys have any ideas about how the discussion post-results could be handled? Inside this thread or an extra one?

One permanent sticky extra, no new sticky per month as with the lol-pre's is needed, me thinks, posts have dates anyway, but this is My feelings about, that.
Just so there is some sort of ON topic about this.
What to call the new thread?
Reaper Contest Feedback & Critique?

We could probably have that discussion in this thread, but we're already almost to 250 posts. I wouldn't think the discussion needs to be sticky as long as the title is good. I think a new thread might be better just due to the size of this one. People probably don't want to have to scroll to page 7 for the discussion.

I think I agree, keeping it in the same thread will keep it all together. There's already been some good discussion regarding the LUFS thingy.

It's pretty easy to get to the last page.

Last page isn't really the problem, it's finding something in the middle, it's not a problem when just a page or two but beyond that it gets annoying to find individual posts, that's a problem in our DIY electronics thread and way worse in the "sounds like ass" thread.

So I don't really care but it will be more difficult to navigate later which I often do in threads of value.

This was my point of view as well.
The good thing about keeping the same thread is that everyone pertinent is already subscribed.

Hi Karbo, yeah, I know what you mean, but I doubt it will get any where near that big.

But I'm with you, what ever is decided on is fine with me, I'll be around, one way or the other.

Or use this thread and edit post #1 with a link from where the result discussion starts. If there will be "no useful" information from that point on in-between, it will be also in a new thread

I think that's a great idea. That really solves both sides.

For future reference, can we get a succint "how to" guide on how to hit a certain LUFS using only free/Reaper included tools?

Post 116
http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=116

There is additional info about True Peak in post 118.

If I get time, I can try writing up a better instruction set. Possibly with screen shots or screen capture video.

Inside the project I use the JS: EBUR128 from TB Pro Audio to get an idea.

Thanks, BJORG. I'll look into this when I get the chance. I wasn't aware of this particular JS. It looks like there's been some development of it recently. I'll consider the usage of this JS when I review a procedure. Unless, of course, you'd like to recommend a procedure using this JS?

It's pretty easy. Just insert this JS in your master track and keep it open while you play your project. You get the values online. The first one is IL LUFS, which is the one we care I guess.

In my project from the October contest you can see it in action. There I inserted it in the first track which is called Pre-Master. But in the effect folder from the October contest is an old version. Meanwhile you can download V2.3 from the thread I posted above.

The JS is working similar to the VST-Plugin dpMeterII, also from TB Pro Audio. Same measuring just a different look. Check it out:

Cool and congrats zacki. I can now go back and match names to mixes and also participate in the post-mortem discussion. Hopefully I can remember all those things I noticed when mixing.

Congrats to the winner !
Now it would be nice to have some comments from his part, on his mixing process and choices, so that we learn a thing or two in the process. Last month winner didn't leave any, which was disappointing.

Default Post Mortem

A few things that I remember about those tracks, will list more observations once I can get back to the studio...

1. Groove was good overall but there were LOTs of rhythmic flubs that made it come and go - usually the acoustic hitting late or the bass groove - there was a single note in the bass groove that was critical to nail every time so when that one wasn't dead on, it hurt the groove - also that one slide up/down note would have been better if done every other time instead of every time. I didn't fix them but I did fix maybe two late acoustic hits that I couldn't live with.

2. Bass player overplayed in some places. Especially during the outro, I purposely did not try to make those chipmunk bass runs audible in that section because it was already occupied by the lead guitar part of the outro. I'm not one to constrain a bass player, but all that noodling during that section was a poor choice since two other guitars already had it covered.

3. I think several of us cut back on the guitars during the verses. I found it interesting that several of us did that on our own. I'm assuming they were left in for the mixer to pick what they wanted but had I been in that band, the first thing I probably would have addressed is that all musicians are all playing almost all the time.

4. Bass guitar recording, maybe I'm spoiled but those were far worse bass tones than I can typically get in my meager home studio in my sleep - by a large margin. My guess there was that it was a 'mic it then plug in and go' session rather than a let's get great tones then record session.

5. There were some motifs that could have been more aware of and out of the way of the vocal, don't remember which, would need to go back and review but it is a common oversight.

Re: Reaper plugins

I was a little disoriented at first but not long. I didn't find myself really needing non-reaper plugins except for saturation and limiting type stuff. What that means is that many of my third-party favorites are probably my favorites because they are plug and go, where to do the same in the reaper plugins I'd have to step back and consider individual params and know the numbers better. I also likely should have explored more JS plugins which I did not do.

If I had to mix all day everyday with Reaper plugins then I could see value in plugins that offer a faster workflow but the reaper plugs were plenty capable of doing most things and they were definitely not always slow, only for certain things.

Yes, recording and arranging wise it was definitely not the best source material to work on.
Next month will be much much better!

Just to be clear, that was not a complaint about this contest.

It was only observations about the tracks and playing - To be honest, most engineers who do this for a living have to deal with such the majority of their careers - which is actually one of the reasons I got out of it professionally years ago.

I simply wanted to mention things I/we noticed so that it benefits us all since these things are all things, we all need to be aware of and so on.

Of course, I got that but I wanted to let you know I'm aware that the recordings until now were kinda a major flaw and that I'm looking for songs with more pre-production for the next months.

OK fellows, I'm speechless and I want to say Thank You to all contributors, congratulations and Dave. I hope that I will soon find the time to write a little bit, but if you open my project you will see maybe not much. One of my principle is KISS: Keep It Stupid Simple

Great job everyone!

If applying 3 pts to 1st vote, 2 pts to 2nd vote, and 1 pt for third...

First: zacki (31 pts)
Second: soundguy84 (16 pts)
Third: James HE (12 pts)

Not trying to diminish anyone's votes here. Just trying to place the top three in my own interpretation of the voting scheme.

I'm really interested to look at everyone's projects. Thank you all!

Hi Dave,

Can I recommend for next month, due to some previous discussion in this thread, that an original project folder be generated with the audio files in the subfolder you prefer be distributed with all stems already converted to FLAC. (Since we are redistributing the source files anyway) This should substantially reduce the download time both pre and post contest.

This past month's Indaba Mixing Contest for Dave Pensado was a really great song with lots of tracks and excellent arrangement, although quite a lot of clipped tracks, and a lot of tracks overall. I don't know if we can get permission to use it though.

Quick comment... I'm a bit puzzled that most of the mixes that scored well were somewhat heavy in reverb (compared to most commercial stuff).

To be clear, that is not a complaint, I have no qualmss. Not sure how to say that without it sounding ungrateful (because I am grateful) so it is a professional ask only simply based on looking at votes then clicking on the corresponding mixes.

Maybe I'm just hearing more than I think I am.
