Easiest way to fade out a song?
I have a song but I need to fade out the ending.
What is the easiest/quickest way to do this?
Note that this will involve multiple audio tracks
but no MIDI tracks (all WAVs).
I'm using Reaper 2.46 if it matters.

Choose the option to show master track in the TCP
then use a volume envelope on the master track to fade the whole song.
Cheers

check you're routing. maybe your tracks are bypassing the master and going directly to your sound card outputs. if that's not the case, i would have to say user error. you made the master volume envelope visible and created a fade?

brainwreck,
That was the ticket - make master envelope visible <My Duh!>
and create a fade. I was trying to record the fader movements.
Yep! User error. Wolffman was about two steps ahead of where I am with Reaper but everything he said is %100 correct. You were
digging back to only one step ahead and that helped me get her done...
Sooo, Here's what I did
1. Select "View" (with a Left-Click at the top menu) then "Show Master Track"
2. Highlight the new Master Track (Left-Click on "Master") and then Left-Click on "Master Envelopes" (the default label for this box displays "trm")
3. Under "Envelope," check the "Volume" box
4. In the Master Track view, a yellow line will appear (default theme color)
5. Left-Click on the new-yellow line to insert a "starting point" where you want to start the fadeout. A little square box will appear. This is a "marker."
6. Now Left-Click on the same yellow line near the END of the song to insert the next marker and then (Left-click and drag) move the final marker all the way down (to zero volume). You should notice the yellow-line connecting the two-new markers reflecting the linear decrease in volume over time.
7. You can go back and move the two-new markers forward or backward (left or right - or even Up and Down!) as to where to begin and end the fadeout
That's it! A perfect fadeout.
Thanks for your help!
Reaper is great, in part, because of all the help on the forums.
Technical writers are so anal aren't they...

Quickest, easiet way:
Render out the song to a .wav file and do it in an audio editor.
I prefer to do my fades in SoundForge because I can use its graphical fade in/out tool to put different curves on the fade.
By working on a rendered .wav, I can also have several "Saved As" copies to compare.

can't believe it's taken this long to say.
fading in / out is a mastering thing. it's not REAPER's primary function and it's a two second job in any wave editor.

The brainwreck method certainly the quickest and easiest. I do something similar to what Tim O and others suggested, but Reaper IS my audio editor.
Typically I get my overall mix down on any given song and most often even fade some of the parts out at different places to make the end interesting, but don't worry about the overall fade. Then I render a .wav file of that. Open that in a separate Reaper project and you can use the various item fade styles or the volume envelope to give it the fade for the overall song. I like to do this as part of a mastering step for several songs, where I am trying to make their volume and overall sonic feel similar. So the fade out per song is just another part of that process. Lots of ways to do the same thing, just a matter of how you like to work.

I think both way are fine but if it's an important mix I would use the second method. Reaper is my wave editor too.

Wow! I was just trying to fade 16 audio tracks at the SAME RATE.
I bet I am getting in way over my head, but how would I do seperate fades for tracks in Reaper?
I bet I will spend the next few years trying to figure this out!!!
Maybe I should add a Sig Line that sez: "I'm a drummer, cut me some slack!"
You desk jockeys should get a kick out of that!

The same way you faded out the master (that is if I understood your question correctly).

Hi Everyone!
I'm pretty much a noob at reaper, but have messed with it on and off for a little while.
Instead of starting a new thread, I found this one.
I'm trying to do the multi-track fade in reaper, and am following Mr PHP's directions.
I can only get as far as getting to the volume line in the master to appear. I can slide the line up and down, but left clicking does not produce a marker box.
I'm running V3.63
Thanks for any help.
Edited to add:
Ahhhhhhhhhh, got it now, it was a right click for me, not a left.

OMG... well can't stop myself from a few comments:
to those that are confused about envelopes:
Have you gotten the User Guide PDF and looked up info about envelopes and points and point shapes and the various modes for envelopes such as trim, read, write, latch, etc.? IF not you really want to do that.
Sure I could write it again here but why? It's already been written for you in the user guide. See section 16 Automation with Envelopes
Personally, I prefer to have envelope [automation] in lanes below the actual track but you can have the line and points right over the wav file if you like that. Hey, you can even switch between those two view at will.
As to the comment about "'...doing it in an audio editor ...cuz you get better control of the fade curve.." NONSENSE!
In reaper you can have automation envelopes on each of any individual tracks as well as on the Master track and with the various point shapes and the control of those curves you can make as detailed and complex a curve as you can image. Way more than what any normal audio editor can do.
You can add and subtract points, change their type of shape, their position, etc. endlessly. You can select a group of points and copy and paste them all to another track. You can freehand draw a curve of points and then use an action to reduce the number of points used to make that curve to save some cpu.
AND all this is rather easy IF you give it a just about 30 minutes of learning and practice.
hahaha "I'm a drummer"..."I'm new to all this" ..."I'm a blond" ...sooo?

Fading out the master track just takes about 4-5 mouse clicks in reaper so I'm a bit surprised anyone could think it's easier to do it in an external wave editor.

Well I thought about what hopi wrote and here is my take: People (like me) who have read the manual but not slowly would like to be able to just do things when we need to, however, not everything can be intuitively obvious that would make for a ton of bloatware. So being able to search and get the answer to a solution (because the pages of this forum are indexed in search engines) is a great help as is @hopi letting me know where to read up on the general subject (at the time I was in need I didn't remember there was a general subject of such, perhaps I should read the manual 3-5x!). As for the convenience of dumping it into a wav file and editing the wav file, yuck! I want to have all my finished work in one location so I if I need to go back, remaster stuff and/or change things I will have it all there, otherwise I would definitely forget finishing touches and so forth. Best regards all and thanks!

sure whatever works for you... and did you know that the pdf manual is a searchable pdf? the ONLY issue I have had with that is knowing what word is used by reaper that you want to search for. At the same time, often a little reading here and there will show you the word you want... then you can do a proper search and rapidly get to the section in the manual you want.
of course the forum is also the best place on any of our local planets to get some help...

Hi booyuko-
Welcome to the forums!
Yes, it was started 6 years ago, but that doesn't mean it's automatically obsolete, right (or maybe that's not what you were suggesting...)? I see interesting and helpful threads resurrected here all the time.

Sure, six years old, but nobody has yet mentioned...
I personally prefer to fade out the individual tracks because it can leave the reverb tails intact. The song fades out, but in the same space that it was at full volume, rather than the whole room fading out. It's a subtle difference, but I'm a nutjob.
The easiest way to do this is to first set all of the individual items to end at the same time, then select all and grab the fade out marker at the end of any one of the items and pull it where you want it.

1. bring Master track in it will default to the top of your tracks.
It is good to have it in all your projects.
2. Click the TRIM box
3. Click VOLUME
4. Where you need to finish right or left (I can not remember)point cursor and click on
track volume line placing a point. Point is in the resulting box.
Then place another point further back in the Song. you can give this point a shape if
you look in the box which appears.
5. Pull down the last point to inf.
You are good to go.
Hope I got this right
