Default Video Noob: exporting a video for watching on Iphone.

Total video noob here with a question:

Let's say i ripped a piece of video from Youtube.
I import this into Reaper.
I make some video edits in Reaper.
I now want to export this edited video with the right video settings,so it can be watched on an Iphone (5/6/7/8) and has the right size on an Iphone, so just the size that fills up the Iphone screen as good/musch as possible.

I really don't have a clue which video export settings to use best for this.
Any (Reaper OSX) Video Guru to The Rescue plz ?

Warm Regards !

I'm not a video guru...

But I know you need to pass the file via iTunes to get it on the phone. Ands iTunes needs mp4, m4v or mov. I'm not sure which other formats it can convert for phone use, but this is the easiest way.

I'm sure there are other ways...

Hi Vanhaze,

there are many settings to mess things up. But fortunately there is nothing special about iPhone videos, cause all smart phones just play the standard video proportions hd and true hd.

So there are some things to keep in mind: If your video source is Youtube, the format should be already a 1920x1080 or a 1080x720. So if you didn't change the resolution, you should take the source resolution as export resolution. To make sure to get the right data, right click on the video item, go to source properties and take a look whats in there. You will find something like 1280x720@30.00fps.

In the render setting you will find presets with the same resolutions and frame rates. But there is the main question: Which codec and bitrate?
I'm pretty sure you are on a mac, so I don't know what kind of video encoder will be available for you. But it can't be wrong to choose a mp4 or mov encoder first with a standard quality of 95%.

That's all.

But you could run in problems if your source video resolution differs or you have cropped, zoomed or layered different videos. This can lead into black borders and/or squished pictures.

Just try it out. And don't forget to choose a higher audio bitrate because the 128 standard isn't so good.

Here some hints:

That's how the mp4 h.264 (popular codec) settings should look like!

Here you could choose to take the resource resolution for the export!

Great info Eliseat, thanks a bunch !

@cyrano: Thank you too for helping me.
Regarding your answer, in my OP i should have stated that i not necessarily want to put the edited video on my Iphone, it's rather for sending it via (for example) Whatsapp on Iphone to a friend or family.
