Default File Management

I have been using Reaper for several months. I love the things it does but it is a pain in one way-file management. Every time I do a punch in or a comp track, I end up with more files than I will ever need.

The only way I have found to deal with it is to make a wav file for each track when I am done editing. Then I bring that back into the project on a new track, save the project under a slightly different name and delete the original tracks and files.

Is there an easier way? Can I set Reaper so it doesn't store as many versions?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

-If you know you don't want to keep a recording pass, use Ctrl-space to stop recording. This keeps it from ever writing the unneeded file.

-Create a takes toolbar with buttons for 'Delete active take' and 'Crop to active take' to clean out bad takes easily.

-After mixing is done,
1) use 'Save project as' with 'new folder' and 'copy audio files' ticked, and save to your backup drive (which backs up only the stuff you want to keep). Then (2) delete project folder on the work drive.
Then (3) 'Save project as' with 'new folder' and 'copy audio files' ticked, and save back to your working drive.
Voila, all unneeded files are gone, and your project is backed up as well.
