Default Best CD Burner?

I'm looking for a quality external USB CD-R burner to burn compliant master CDs to send to the replication plant.
Any recommendations on current models that are available that aren't crazy expensive?

I've read that Plextor is a good brand. Thoughts on the PX-B310U?

It would be good to have one that can burn reliably at slow speed for important projects and if it can burn fast (48 or 52x) for less important bulk duplications that would be helpful too.

Thanks!

I'm not really sure if the new Plextors are on par with the old models with which you can use the "Plex Tools" program (which is more or less essential for checking errors on the disk). I still have 2 old units, one of them built into a SCSI firewire case. Works great (though I prefer DDP for the pressing plant)...

Burner and media go hand in hand.

I had an external Plextor unit here that couldn't burn the media I had below 10x. A much older burner of a gentleman who still sends carefully crafted CD-Rs to pressing plants, can, and it can check the block error rate as well. Not sure anybody sells those any longer.

If in doubt, go DDP. Cleaner, safer, faster and less prone to really bad excuses from pressing plants.

It is a myth that burning at lower speeds reduces errors. I've covered this previously.

You can still buy a Plextor Premium for about $100 new.

CD-Rs have errors, period. You should send a file, not a disc to the pressing plant and let them make a master from it.

If you insist on using CD-rs use JVC discs(they are Taiyo Yudens).

I've had good results with the Sony Optiarc drives. Plextor drives are no longer what they used to be.
