Most of the effort in API programming is just doing all of the typing.

Maybe a few users can use this with Melodyne. But, will ReaTune support ARA?

ReaTune already kind of has that since many years, the Update button analyses all the audio on the track as fast as possible without having to play it in at realtime. Unfortunately it doesn't do the update automatically, so if you edit the items on the track, the update button has to be manually pressed after that.

First there was the release of JamStix v4. Now we hear we will have ARA in Reaper. If someone next announces a flying car it will certainly be the end of days.

Copuld someone explain in simple words: what the heck is ARA anyway? And would it help a midi and notation based guy like me?

The main use case is for audio processing. It allows plugins like Melodyne to quickly analyze the audio from the track/media item. If ARA isn't available, the audio needs to be played manually into the plugin in realtime, which can be very time consuming and annoying to do.

No, it won't help you anyway.
http://www.celemony.com/en/service1/...es?checkLang=1
"ARA allows a DAW and plug-in to exchange information about the audio file, tempo, pitch, rhythm and much else besides and thereby work considerably more closely together. The plug-in is closer to what’s going on in the DAW and therefore runs more smoothly and efficiently. The DAW, for its part, can integrate the plug-in far more fully and make more targeted use of it – as though the plug-in were part of the DAW."

Thank you Xen and Vit. I can see it might be helpful. I do use plugins, so why not?

Would it help VSTi as well as VST and other plugs?

It works with plugins that implement it. (There are very few of them, can be counted with the fingers of one hand.) Existing VST etc plugins without ARA capabilities are not affected. I don't see many use cases for instrument plugins, but who knows if there could be some.

Super!
Note that while in Sonar it has worked in general (with drag&drop tempo extraction/audio to MIDI conversion and multi-track support in Studio), "abusing" it by manipulations with ARA region was "unforgivable" (crash).
I would prefer non stable functionality is locked over "can work with luck", so any operations with underlaying document forbidden till water proved.

Hehe... Indeed, a thumb or index finger is probably all that's needed to count.

It isn't used by many (I can only think of Melodyne), but Melodyne is an absolute beast in the pitch correction business. People can make an argument about other algorithms and products for monophonic processing, but I haven't seen anything that comes close to Melodyne's polyphonic pitch editing ability. This will be an interesting feature to track once it's introduced to the pre-releases.
