I'm kind of surprised you're defending the dated look of some aspects of Reapaer.
In the image you posted you can see that the meters and some of the faders are clearly similar to Calkwalk v1. Open any JS plugin, even with a custom theme and you'll see what I mean. These need to be updated even if WT isn't able to. The dated green meters, faders and knobs have got to go.
Even Calkwalk Sonar (image below) looks more modern these days than Reaper. There is so much talent here on the Reaper forum. There has to be a way we can build a more modern GUI for Reaper.

At first I was really excited since we were getting closer and closer to V6. I couldn't wait to find out how it would look. Maybe my expectations were unfair, but as you mentioned, it turned out to be a continuation of what we already had.
I thought we were going to get a new color palette, new buttons and knobs, new icons, etc. In other words, a completely new theme.
White Tie succeeded in updating what was already there. He's really doing great work. It just isn't different enough for me to justify leaving my I Logic theme. But again, it's all on me and my expectations.
|
I totally agree. The logic theme, the Fusion theme and a few others out there are really fantastic. I really wish the dated knobs, faders and horrible green meters would get updated so that whenever I have to bounce audio or use a JS plugin, my DAW doens't suddently look like it's from 1995.

I'm not sure how this is any more modern than Reaper. It's aesthetically pleasing, yes, but so are many of the available Reaper themes, some of which look very modern, some of which look retro.
As far as I know, Sonar can only look one way. Reaper has endless possibilities.

Just a quick reminder : I'm not going to do design by committee on the forum.
I am, most definitely please, asking for feedback on the big script change made in version 1.04. If you don't think the direction I'm taking should be determined by my non-forum testers, this would be how that would work. I work on a thing, you feedback on a thing, and round we go.

Ok, so I haven't posted anything here yet because I wasn't sure if what I had to say was the kind of feedback you're looking for, but reading that has made me even more confused.
Maybe examples (or a list) of things you do and don't want people to post about would be helpful?

I think it would be very helpful if the first post had a list of "Things WT wants feedback on in this iteration", preferably somewhere near the top since the post is fairly long.

I outlined what feedback I'm looking for here. I do understand that this gets lost in the noise.

I got to try this for a long time yesterday for drum editing. Everything still kind of feels "big", but it really did start feeling ok
My big issues right now is that on selected items, not only can you not see the grid, but you can't see most of the text either.
The background is so dark its hard not to think that tracks are muted, but I realize people like dark themes so maybe thats just me. I was actually getting pretty comfortable with it!

It was brought up earlier that a potential way to mark selected items would be to color the bar behind the label, how exactly do you do that?

Does a theme have to be specifically written to be controlled by the script?

You can't yet. It was a design suggestion made by carbon.
But this -
- you do by checking "Draw labels above the item" in "Appearance --> Media" in REAPER properties.

Sonar by Band Lab has a limited Theme editor, you can change some images, but it must be the same size (X x Y) as the original. you also can change colors. there is no way to move items around to make your own mixer.
Just look at what themes are available right now. The only things that I see that are different are the colors.
I have found Reaper is the only DAW that has extensive theming capabilities. No other DAW comes close.

Seems to be a bug with meters, notice how the bass sub channel of the bass folder, though at the same folder depth as the room above is skinnier and does not have peak display

It also has a knob for the volume instead of a fader.

The folder indication loss on supercollapse is a known reaper bug, as previously discussed.
Your second image is what happens if you have a very deep folder structure and then turn the folder indent up very high.

On my second image almost the entire monitor. And with a deep folder structure on small monitors, the entire mixer disappears. It would be necessary "if possible" to make some kind of restriction in the indent in the mixer.

I'm comfortable calling the intersection of "I have a 20 deep folder structure" and "I'm unwilling to use the script to reduce the folder indent" as a corner case. I'm a theme maker; I'm not your nanny

So what kind of theme Creator are you?If people on small monitors can't do anything. Of course, we can expand the folder, and navryatli in real work will be such a depth, but still this should be taken into account. After all, you are subject do for the people and not for themselves. Or for yourself???

You can sort of hack it at the moment, as gofer has done with his theme a while ago:
https://stash.reaper.fm/theme/354/re...rack_icons.rar
You can use the item backgrounds or create your own based on these.

Why is the polarity button hidden in TCP unless the track is resized? At least add it to script so it can showed on/off or whatever. People that mostly do multimic recording (including me) use it constantly, also if there is some parallel processing going around it is also necessary to hit it some times. I don't want resize tracks all the time just to see polarity button

I would love to be able to hide all the recording and input stuff in the TCP, I wonder if that's the sort of thing that will be scriptable

Route icon:
the name of route icon on route icon (Route) is unnecessary.. i guess
Script:
if coloring going to be this way, probably will be nice to have some simple version of this script exactly for coloring purpose, expert coloring or something... (??)
maybe on the mac coloring is fine (workflow), but on windows it's not so great
Master TCP:
??
(I was not reading whole thread ofc; so, sorry if repeated)
-can i ask for a more solid look of trackname area if the record icon is hidden form tcp ?
-and maybe difference between volume knob and pan knob, there was black one, that was really dope
-tint options per track tcp/mcp (??) to avoid mess whith folders (or busses)
-separator
i mean there is a lot work to do.. i just wish the best of luck and patience to people who make it. Thanks !

Finally!!
I can tweak this theme to have coloured mixer background.
I rely on colour-coding so much, i never understood why it got removed from Ver 5. I had to use 4.0 up to this point. (It is still superior in many aspects though)
I hope in the future we can customize very narrow channels for separation purposes.
I totally love the automatic coloring of folder edges!!
This should be avoided from a UI design standpoint. Not just ugly, but makes it hard for the eyes to scan the information.
Great job!

Maby it's the "No news is good news"?
v1.04 removed some and we are back to a more oldschool and script combo it looks like and we are supposed to whine if this is *meh* (with a reason why) or report broken'ness.
SmajjL don't have a problem with this personaly so that's why SmajjL is STFU atm.

Sorry but how exactly do I tint the MCP panels in this alpha theme? If this is back as implied above by high votage then this is really a "finally! thing"

You can't do it easily, you have to edit 6-8 files in the theme. I can upload my theme if you are interested. (It's not perfect yet)
