Default best (free) sampler for 2011...

Hi folks,

I know this is a tried and tested forum post but,

Having browsed the forum, there doesn't seem anything other than short circuit 1.x. from 2009. Is there anything free that beats it even now in 2011? UVI?, Sampletank?

Any advice would be cool.

Cheers.

imho there´s no freeware sampler (and i mean a fully featured sampler; no sample player!!) that comes even close to shortcircuit!

I use Kontakt Player, which is free. I actually got the whole Komplete 7 Players series, which are all free as well. I really like the sounds they have in them. Very useful for the kind of music I'm working on. Now if you're looking to actually create your own samples and import them, I have no idea :-p

Well, if we start comparing any samplers against sample players, almost none of the high paying samplers known as such are nothing more but fully featured sample players either.

I can understand the convenience of calling them such, but there still are real samplers too which actually do sample also. Sampler, eh? Although, it seems that arguably one of the best of them, Emulator X, is kinda fading.

I have Kontakt 4 and I still use shortcircuit in my projects. It is way faster for one-shots, slices, and just silly fun mangling with filters and effects and the mod matrix.

highlife might be old but sits in the zone imbetween reasamplomatics simplicity and shortciruits complexity, so can be handy. though renoise 2.7 acting as a sampler is pretty sweet but isn't quite free.

i also don't quite understand how a sample player can call itself a sampler, historically thats all kinds of wrong, your a rompler/sound module or something! not a sampler!!

I use Kontakt, but i dont use it much, as i tend to do sampling on my PC in Soundforge, and then edit it and drag and drop in my DAW. unless im playing a sampled (instrument) i never use Kontakt. I also tent to use my Korg Triton Extreme for sampling too.. depends how inspired i am at the time ;-)

Also, Reason 4 has some great samplers (AKAIesque) but doesnt record... but great as a "Rompler" non the less...

So much great software out ther these days its hard to choose!...
