Default individual or overall?

good morning all, i have a question regarding the use of samples, specifically drums. all of the drums i use in my music comes from samples and i know that most if not all samples are pre processed (overprocessed). so, is there a need to compress these individually? right now i've come to the point where i just put a vst comp (ssl comp) on my master and mix through it. but waaaay back in the day i argued at length with a producer friend of mine that drum machines and workstations ( akai, ensonique, korg etc) sounded compressed so why would we need to compress during tracking or mixing?. well we never agreed , but i have always felt that other than eq for tone/taste compression wasnt needed. my taste in tone is very dark for bass, kick, pads, and fairly bright for hihats ,cymbals, strings etc, with a decent midrange, would compressing on a track by track basis using sampled instruments be overkill?
maybe im in the minority, but somehow over the years, ive started using less and less compression and eq, and have focused on tuning my instruments (vsti)
and drum samples , and taking time to audition sounds that seem to "fit" sonically. well im ranting a bit now so i'll see what you guys and gals have to say...... thanx.

Hi Curt,

I'd say the result counts, not what others say. If you're happy with searching for sounds that fit, why not doing so? If you think this or that sample needs compressor or another treatment - do it. It's most important that you are happy with your mix. I personally wouldn't put a compressor to the master if only the drums need compression.

Ok, if I want to though, how would I insert a hardware mix buss comp into the mix, as rendering is not real time?

If you want to use a hardware compressor, you must render real time; there's no other way.

Everyone was a noob once, so never mind!

BTW: you need a soundcard with more than one stereo in/out for this.
