i7 vs i5, is hyperthreading etc worth it?
Hey everyone?
I have a computer I built with an intel i5 4690k. It's a quad core and uses the 1150 socket.
I've been wondering if it's worth the price to upgrade to an i7 for the same socket....They have a slightly higher clock speed and hyper threading etc, but they are close to twice as expensive.
I usually use tons of plugins in my REAPER sessions, and I feel like it's pretty much always the CPU that is the bottle-neck. How much of a difference does hyper threading make with a DAW?

I built mine with an i7 4770 presumably about when you built yours.
16gb of ram & 7200rmp WD Black rotating rust drives.
If you are regularly showing very high cpu numbers in reaper maybe it would be worth looking at an i7, but I am stashing a little money away so I can afford to upgrade my desktop to a much newer i7 eventually. Remember there has been 5xxx,6xxx,7xxx,8xxx & now 9xxx since our cpus launched.
As to hyperthreading, I cant even remember if I have it enabled or not. Probably yes, but I have no idea without googling it in this forum as to the significance oof it in terms of Reapers performance.

Well, I'm no real specialist, but I built a desktop no so long ago, and it seems if you're not going for ultra low latency, hyper threading do indeed improve performances.

Thought this was interesting, got it from a VMWare website:
Hyperthreading performance improvements are highly application-dependent, and some applications might see performance degradation with hyperthreading because many processor resources (such as the cache) are shared between logical processors.
Does anyone know if Reaper supports hyperthreading?

At the recommendation of many tips/tricks to get the best performance out of a Windows system, I have disabled hyperthreading in the bios of my i7. To be honest, I don't know exactly why but it seems to work well.

Probably has to do with how the application software manages the resource, and the comment I posted from the VMWare site about multiple processors still having to share resources like cache.
Thing you have to remember about hardware specs is they don't really mean a whole lot when it comes time to execute application software. If the software you're running isn't coded to take advantage of those specs and features, then they're not going to do anything for you. That's why I asked the question about hyper threading support in Reaper.

Yeah, I have heard stuff along this line as well, so I'm interested to know as well.
And yeah as ivansc said, this CPU has been around for a while now, I guess i'm curious if it's worth the price to upgrade to an i7 of the same socket or just holding out until I upgrade to a whole new system.

Bugger. Now I am going to have to stop what I am doing and see if I have got HT enabled & try it if I havent!

It depends on how cheap you can buy one of these... On google an i7 4770 ranges between 160-300 usd... You can find the Ryzen 5 2600 cheaper than this (of course you would still need the other components)...
My opinion: The new AMD family will be released soon, I would wait for it, to see how it all settles out and what Intel does.
If the 3000 Ryzen processors are good you will probably have both Intel and AMD options that will give you a much better bang for the buck.
And if AMD craps out on it, the 2000 Ryzens or the 9th gen Coreis will be cheap (and will still give you a huge difference in performance).

Someone recommended this recently on another thread; great wee book! Deals with all aspects of pc performance.
