Default Chaining envelope in lane feature

How it feature works? Cannot find difference.Please show what changes in workflow?

An example. Add a new track, insert an empty media item into it. Add a Volume track envelope and make some changes to it. Then right click over the envelope panel area and select from the menu another envelope, e.g. Pan.

Now with the preference shown above, the old envelope, in this case the Volume envelope, moves to media lane. If that preference is set to Hide old envelope instead, that's what happens to the volume envelope.

Thank you xpander! Now it`s clear!I couldn't understand how this worked because by default Im configured to add new envelopes to the track lane, not to separate lane.
