Default Best "FSU" plugins

I find myself wanting to easily fuck up (even worse) my sounds.

What VST/JS/LV2 plugins do you use for this purpose?

Distortion, glitching, slicing, reverse stuttering, whatever.

These are fun. They seem to really tune their plugs so you get cool but usable effects.

FSU OGs.

Not enough? Make your own effects chains from 40 modules in BYOME, times 3 bands in Triad. Don't like the prices? Wait for the next Plugin Alliance sale.

Good luck, have fun!

The Mangle, drag a snippet of a track into this and utterly destroy it/make it beautiful/turn it into a synth: http://sound-guru.com/software/mangle/

Ujam finisher plugins are all kind of designed for this, sound pretty good from the videos Iíve seen.

AudioThings Texture, granular reverb that turns things into pad sounds: https://www.audiothing.net/effects/things-texture/

Audio Assault Head Crusher, distortion box: https://audio-assault.com/headcrusher.php

Check out Melda plugins and get their MFreeFX bundle if you havenít already. Those work great for standard application as well as sonic destruction with pretty little effort.

You can mangle your sound with Native Instruments Absynth (in Komplete). It's not just a synth.

NI Driver - mostly for the severe feckery.

All the Valhalla DSP freebies.

Eventide Undulator

Softube Saturation Knob

Soundtoys PrimalTap

Has anyone mentioned Audio Assault's Headcrusher?

I've read that it's a Decapitator clone of sorts (I have zero experience with Sound Toys). I really like it for mangling and distorting, and whatever the list price is, Audio Assault is always running "specials" so you can usually get it for $5 or $7.

Yep, itís very good. A little different sound to Decapitator but I couldnít honestly say that one was Ďbetterí than the other, itís a great little dirt box for an incredibly cheap price. Their xctr is very good too, a little like a multi band version of head crusher but more subtle.

The thing I find annoying with many of these artificial distortion plugins (character compressors included) is that there rarely seems to be any kind of linear progress before very heavy or catastrophic distortion levels (levels I find mostly useless). So rather than being able to rack it up gently they go from inaudible to very severe and very little between.

Never heard the term "FSU" before, and KVR even has a category for this?

What does FSU mean? "F*ck Sounds Up"?

I guess it depends which plugins you mean, and what they are trying to achieve. A lot of analog modelled stuff can be hard to hear in the early onset of distortion and then quickly become ‘too much’ but that’s often true of the equipment they emulated.

If you’re looking for very smooth, gradual transitions into distortion I’d recommend Klanghelm SDRR, Fabfilter Saturn, any of the Slate Digital stuff, Toneboosters Reelbus (certainly 3, haven’t tried 4 yet), Audioassault XCTR, Elysia Phil’s Cascade.

I like the the distortion on most of the delays actually, Replica XT, Valhalla DSP and the grungy textures from Soundtoys Primal Tap. It tends to be the dedicated distortion plugins that perform the worst for me.
Maybe I expect too much?

I might have a play with the Klanghelm again.
He seemed to be talking about getting an EQ out absolutely ages ago. I wonder what happened with that?

I am a ToneBoosters fan, and Reelbus 3 does indeed excel in the area of gradual or incremental transitions. The v4 demo comes with the TB download pack, and I will likely purchase it soon as it's even more customizable with the so-called Drive EQ, which let's you fine-tune the amounts by frequency. The tape echo effects are really good, too.
