Thank you Bluzkat and thank you Chas51.

Just to make it clear to me before spending the big bucks = neither of you had to go online (i.e. connect your DAW machine to the internet) to install this thing, is that right?

I don't think that is the case. You have to go online to authorize it's use on each computer it will be used on. Also, unless you're going to buy the box version, you'll need to download it somehow. Another computer to download and transfer the files would work for that.

From the BFD3 FAQ...

Quote:

Purchasing and licensing

What is the copy protection scheme used in BFD3? [top]

BFD3 features a challenge-response authorization system, with three installs on your own machines allowed simultaneously. You do NOT need to have an internet connection on the computer on which you install BFD3. You must, however, authorize BFD3 before it can be used - there is no 'grace period' after installation.

We have tried very hard to make the authorization procedure as pain-free as possible. Please understand that it is necessary for safeguarding your investment in future development and user support for BFD3. Our software does not use iLok or any other 'dongle' or unified protection scheme. We do not believe in such systems' security, and would rather not pass on their costs to our customers.
Hope this helps.

Enjoy.

listen to bluzkat.

I am a new user.
just got it.
I can only tell you the way I got it.
I bought it as a download.
I was connected to the internet to download it.
it took many hours.
to authorize, required being on the internet, to go to their website.
it was very easy.

also, I have only used it a tiny bit.
from what I can see, it is a positively awesome program.
I am so glad I got it.

bluzkat, I can see already, you are right. it is really cool.

How can Addictive Drums be even better than BFD?? I've given it a quick test before and it seems pretty limited - much fewer options (I don't mean that in a bad way at all).

I'm curious about everybody else's opinion

I never said better, I just prefer it. I demoed BFD and felt it was more limited and cumbersome. I make drum tracks that consistently fool great drummers I know. But really, there is no one "best" of any software, including DAW software ()
Just use what makes the most sense for your work and whatever feels best FOR YOU.

It just depends on how you like to go about things. BFD gives you much more in depth control of every little parameter of every drum and every stage of micing, room setup, etc. If you want that kind of control, then anything that doesn't have it will feel limited.

Addictive Drums hits a middle ground somewhat; the samples are somewhat doctored and there are only so many of them, but you still have numerous options for tuning and effects and sends and all kinds of stuff.

I tried out BFD Eco to get a sense of how it worked, and picked up Slate SSD EX, and AD1. I've been drumming for many years and recording for longer. Slate sounded too canned to me, not enough control, and BFD was like building everything from the ground up, which was cool but I wasn't really craving having to bring every detail of doing that with acoustic drums from the real world. AD hit the sweet spot for me, but as with virtually everything in the music gear world, that sweet spot is just for ME. Yours can be in a totally different place.

My overall take is that all of the major drum VSTi offerings these days are exceptional and you should just see which one feels right to you. They'll all do the job and then some.

I currently own and more importantly regularly USE in excess of ten different drum romplers.
Some free, some paid. In a nutshell, they ALL have their uses.
I started out with Toontrack and I guess EZD1 & 2 and Superior are generally my starting point, but I put that down as much to "first love true love" as anything else.
Drum romplers have come a HUGE way in a very short time.
Remember ocean Way being the grandaddy, then Megasaurus?

I had not moved up from BFD Eco (which I own twice) because there was never an upgrade path, but at this price I am feeling stirrings in my wallet.

EDIT: Just went and priced it up properly and at over 100GB pounds for the "upgrade" when the full product is available for exactly the same price, no way. FXSolutions taking the mickey out of existing customers again.
Think I will buy the new HipHop!EZX instead....
