Default Video editing lags with VLC - use FFMPEG

Hi,

I loaded two videos (mp4 and mov) to a new project for film scoring. I noticed that with the VLC there are lags when editing. The videos run smoothly, but when editing it is clearly noticeable that Reaper reacts slower, especially when zooming.

I then installed FFMPEG with the help of this post "https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=82459".

Since then everything runs smoothly.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Does anyone know what the problem is with VLC?

Thanks!

AFAIU, VLC is not used for editing, only for playback. ffmpeg is used for video editing, and Reaper ships with a stripped down version, maybe even outdated, and so for serious editing the full ffmpeg is needed.

Note that ffmpeg 4.3 versions and later have problems with rendering certain audio formats together with certain video formats. See for instance here: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=2412306
