Putting music on YouTube
Does anybody here put music on YouTube?
I'd like to put my music on there, but not sure where to start.
Do I need to make an actual video file with my song? Or Can I just upload the song?
If I make a video, it would probably just be like
"Artist Name:
Song Title:"
Do I need some kind of software to do that or can I do all that on YouTube itself?

I just put a video on youtube and used openshot video editor to do it. You need it to be a video even if its just a single picture the whole time. Youtube has a creator studio but I dont know what it does. You might pull up some youtube videos on it.
And dont forget to spend the first 8 minutes of your 39 minute video on why "lemons are deadly" to remind me to subscribe and be notified so I dont miss your next video on "getting the mail, youve been doing it all wrong!"

Use the video processor to make your title like you mentioned and then render off the video with like 1 frame per second. Itll make the video render super super fast and upload will be DRASTICALLY speed up as well. I render the file as an .mp4

I put my stuff on you tube. I usually do a video, either with Powerdirector or Vegas. Its way easier than using Reapers video stuff. You tube doesn't work without a video. One of my songs has only a static picture just because I couldn't think of a video to do. No one ever watches my stuff anyway. All you have to do is upload your video and maybe add a few comments about it or add tags. For music, you're probably better off on one of the audio streaming sites. I've never tried them, mainly because I've never produced anything worth the effort of signing on to one of those. The stuff I do is just to keep me occupied and for my friends to look at. Here's my channel if anyones interested.

Remember to do your mix/mastering so that your loudness is around -14 on the master volume level. I think that is the loudness level that Youtube, Spotify want for uploads. If you need to use a compressor/limiter, otherwise shoot for -14 in general. That is my understanding.

@Juan D'Fall
Very musical, guitars and good melodies always get me in, played through all the tracks, if there'd been more I'd have listened to those as well, cheers.

I will carry on "mastering" to -16 LUFS and -1dB TP, regardless. It kind of fits my boring ambient stuff anyway. I pretty much never compress or limit although I do, from time to time, use Pro-Q's dynamic EQ feature, just to tame some annoying frequencies. I find that easier to understand than all that compression hard knee, soft knee stuffs.

-16 LUFS is fine - YT won't turn that down but it won't turn it up either. What Epic was replying to was most likely the comment of -14 on reaper's meter being fine and that isn't accurate enough for a streaming service target because it only use a moving RMS window assuming RMS and completely unreliable if using peak.
And if you every want to know what YT is or isn't doing, just right-click > stats for nerds.

Thanks
To be honest, I really switched onto this a couple of years ago when I started releasing my albums on Bandcamp. It just found that I preferred the listening experience when all of the tracks were around the same average level.

Possible, but it is worth listening to episodes 52 and 67. I mean, this is Ian Shepherd, the guy that waged the war against the Loudness War, and now he is saying that you shouldn't aim for a target.
It left me scratching my head thinking, "WTF."

Yes, I sometimes do the nerdy thing to check out other people's stuff. I'm not sure if I should be surprised that most of the stuff I watch/listen to is being turned down, quite a bit.

I've watched most every video Ian has over the last couple of years. I agree with almost everything he says but not all.
On a side note, I kind of don't have to aim, because where I end up when using my ears to my personal preference has almost always been about the same as the target but... if it were loud enough to get turned down, I'd just let that happen because it sounds like I want.

This is pretty much what Ian is saying now.
If something sounds good, to your ears, then why compromise that?
Me? I'm a numbers man. I do not have a Golden Ear, so when I found out about all this LUFS stuff I grabbed for it, like many of the other "crutches" I use to make up for my lack of skills.
Before that I was using the Bob Katz levels, which is another RMS based thing. But that system, as far as I know, does not have an "integrated" reading, which I have grown to like since moving over to LUFS.
End of the day, I ain't a "mastering engineer" and I'm just winging it, and I am happy in the knowledge that I ain't the only one haha!

IMHO LUFS is often good even if only academic. My ears always have the final decision, but I also use meters at times. I don't chase the meters, it's just nice to know and build knowledge over time of what sounds look like. They can teach one a lot about what they hear without interfering with decisions.
And since our ears are so susceptible to literally blocking important elements out completely over time, meters can be great sanity checks - but no reason to chase them.

Make simple video - one picture and your music, use good description, keywords (music genre etc.) and share on youtube. It always good to read what people say about your stuff

LOL, yeah, I mean, I have never given any video on YouTube a thumbs down. If I don't like a video I stop watching it. As far as I'm concerned the thumbs down option is for trolls only. So best to ignore.

I think thumbs up and down is to help the google algorithm bubble good videos to the top and bad ones down. I always vote up or down. Like lawnmower repair videos where they dont fix anything. Thumbs down!

Thank you, Morgan. They take up too much time once I get going on a song, I usually only do one every six months or so. It's only for my own and friends entertainment, really.

Can somebody give me an ELI5 on how to do this in REAPER?
Just the basics... open project, insert track, then what?

There's always one! You know dislikes count as engagement and help to boost the video, right?

Well no-one listens to my music on YT or Bandcamp so there's need to worry about thumbs down or up. Either the world has no musical taste or I don't, either way it's not going to change my life. After over 50 years of music my income from royalties has just hit £20, whoohoo! At least my income from live gigs has been more substantial......

I usually record the song with joyoshare audio recoder, put the track (mostly flac) in a video I shot and post it. Actually, you can just create the content based on your own inspiration. And yes you can just put the track on it, but I think you should merge it with some video at first, even if just video of a pure background.

I've seen some music videos on YouTube with a static background pic, except for what looks like a frequency response display bouncing up and down in the foreground. Anyone know what program is being used to produce that?

If you have a good video screen capture app, you could do it with Reaper and an analyzer plugin.

I'm using Davinci Resolve for video now - it is very easy, easier for me than Premiere and other prosumer level software I have tried. It can be ridiculously compl;ex as well but if you just want to put some stills or clips together it does that with no fuss.
And it is free
And the tutorial videos around tend to be short and to the point - which is a huge plus
And it has good audio mixing and presets for youtube etc

You can composite/key it to get what you want. "Visualizer" should work really well because it has a black BG and allows fullscreen. I might make an example later.
