Hmmm.... are we talking about the same thing ?

If you add the stock MCU interface you must set midi output on the config panel or you don't get feedback, faders don't move etc.

Do you mean something else ?

To clarify, this is the MIDI Device settings in Preferences that list all your midi devices...not for the CSI/MCU plugin scripts in which i have both input/output selected for the surface.

Ah, gotcha' -- that makes more sense.

Yes any inputs/outputs that you use for control surfaces should be disabled in MIDI devices.

If you enable midi input monitoring on the CSI config panel and you press a control surface button do you see midi input ?

Ok, I think we are on the same page...although I do have CONTROL ONLY enabled for the surface in device settings input. I will try disabling....but it always worked with Klinke when control only was enabled.

When I enable in/out midi monitoring, I get nothing when I press anything, even working buttons/faders/pots. Nothing for input, nothing for output. When I monitor with MidiOx, everything shows up...same if I have both monitorings open at once.

I feel it has to be some setting in reaper that is causing this...?

I'll be in the studio tonight, i'll try to take some screenies to show.

Ok Geoff, I got something to work. I got a lot to work. Instead of using the MCU pages I used the Artist pages, and lights lit, etc. Then, it just went away after I went back into CSI to see what I did that made it work.

I experienced same behavior with xtouchmini. I had to shut down reaper, disconect and reconnect the device then restart reaper.

@airon -- I started an FP16.rst file -- combines Channel/ChannelEnd with SingleChannel/SingleChannelEnd. Just enter 8 for number of Channels.

You should get 10 channels if the mapping is right.

If that works we can fill out the rest.

@everyone please install and check for regression.

Checking things out. I started the unit in Studio 1 mode and made a 16-track session. Here's what happened.

CSI.ini uses this entry:
Code:
Page Faderport16Mix FollowMCP NoSynchPages NoTrackColoring 75 255 166
MidiSurface FP16A 8 Bankable 3 1 FP16.rst MCU.axt MCU

The results are here:

FADER 1 controls the master track

FADER 2 - FADER 8 controlled Tracks 1-7

FADER 9 controlled nothing it seems.

FADER 10 controlled track 9

For completeness sake, here's a bunch of output for touching FADERS 1 - 16. The more I move things even minutely, the more OUTPUT messages I get. For that reason I pulled down all faders to -inf just touched them.

I've separated the blocks by fader, and segmented them in to four blocks for easier reference. Value passing data is further down.

Code:
IN -> FP16A 90  68  7f

Moving a fader produced this data.
Code:
eX ab cd
X is the fader number starting at 0, ending at hex 15, f.
abcd are the values as always.

Maybe that master track threw a bunch of things off. Why is there a master track btw ? I couldn't find a way to get rid of it.

Fader 9 and 10 are described like this in the .rst for the Faderport16 at the moment:
Code:
SingleChannel
Fader9 Fader Fader14BitFB -60.0 12.0 e9 7f 7f e9 00 00
FaderTouch9 FaderTouch PressRelease 90 70 7f 90 70 00
Solo9 Solo PressFB 90 50 7f 90 50 00
Mute9 Mute PressFB 90 78 7f 90 78 00
Select9 Select PressFB 90 07 7f 90 07 00
SingleChannelEnd

SingleChannel
Fader10 Fader Fader14BitFB -60.0 12.0 e10 7f 7f e10 00 00
FaderTouch10 FaderTouch PressRelease 90 71 7f 90 71 00
Solo10 Solo PressFB 90 51 7f 90 51 00
Mute10 Mute PressFB 90 79 7f 90 79 00
Select10 Select PressFB 90 21 7f 90 21 00
SingleChannelEnd

Without a master track being in the mix(my personal preference), it would be this.

Code:
SingleChannel
Fader9 Fader Fader14BitFB -60.0 12.0 e8 7f 7f e8 00 00
FaderTouch9 FaderTouch PressRelease 90 70 7f 90 70 00
Solo9 Solo PressFB 90 50 7f 90 50 00
Mute9 Mute PressFB 90 78 7f 90 78 00
Select9 Select PressFB 90 07 7f 90 07 00
SingleChannelEnd

SingleChannel
Fader10 Fader Fader14BitFB -60.0 12.0 e9 7f 7f e10 00 00
FaderTouch10 FaderTouch PressRelease 90 71 7f 90 71 00
Solo10 Solo PressFB 90 51 7f 90 51 00
Mute10 Mute PressFB 90 79 7f 90 79 00
Select10 Select PressFB 90 21 7f 90 21 00
SingleChannelEnd
Must be a little bug somewhere. But at least the SingleChannel section works at one point . Presonus sure pulled a weird one with the buttons.

I'm conducting further testing. Right now, somehow the master track isn't on a fader any more.

Ok, I've got 16 channels working with this .rst on the Faderport 16 on the current CSI build from September 13th.

CSI.ini lines are:
Code:
Page Faderport16Mix FollowMCP NoSynchPages NoTrackColoring 75 255 166
MidiSurface FP16A 8 Bankable 3 1 FP16.rst MCU.axt MCU
Vanilla MCU.axt is being used. No modifications.

Faders, solo, mute and select all work on the 16 channels. God, those button numberings are weird.

I created a NEW session, and there the master track was part of the fader landscape again, meaning FADER 1 controlled the master track and FADER 2-16 controlled tracks 1-15. Banking with the little arrow buttons "Prev" and "Next" to the sides of the large knob above the transport of the Faderport 16 worked for banking.

It could bank below the master track too , so I had some faders on the left controlling nothing.

The first session I used for testing, rewriting and testing stuff does NOT have a master track being controlled by the first fader. Weird.

The Master Track in Reaper is Track 0, that's where it shows up, unless you hide it, or pin it somewhere else.

The visibility of a given track follows either TCP or MCP.

You probably switched the Page from FollowMCP, where the Master is usually visible, to FollowTCP, where the Master is generally not visible.

Geoff, I'm spending today updating the .rst with all the buttons, like instrument, bus and VCA. I'll attempt to keep to the established conventions.

-edit-
I verified the master track problem. Thanks.

Great news !!

Yeah, my bad on the numbering, Fader9 should have been e8

As far as banking above/below, you should be able to go to either "end", that is, you should be able to bank so that there is only one track showing far left, or, going the farthest the other way, one track showing far right.

This is necessary so that you can pin any track to any channel position.

I tested the two endless knobs on the Faderport 16 to see what data they send.

Small knob upper left of console
Code:
Turn RIGHT

  b0 10 xx
xx = 01..3f , 01 being the slowest turn, 3f the fastest turning speed

Turn LEFT
  b0 10 xx
xx = 41..7f , 41 being the slowest turn, 7f the fastest turning speed

Large knob mid right, above transport area

Code:
Turn RIGHT

  b0 3c xx
xx = 01..3f , 01 being the slowest turn, 3f the fastest turning speed

Turn LEFT
  b0 3c xx
xx = 41..7f , 41 being the slowest turn, 7f the fastest turning speed

Dear Geoff, I'm back again with my Qcon ProX/XS, today it is all working. And, can I just say that your MCU plugin is the only one which displays this led meter bridge accurately? That is quite a wow factor. So, I just want to say thanks and please do keep up the good work

Also, anybody have any maps for a C4? I'm totally lost with this thing, I got it to work once but maybe a fluke.

Yep, same with my CMC controllers. They react the same way.

Hi All,

First post on the forum; I'm a long time Reaper user but new to control surfaces...

I use Reaper mainly as tape machine, connected to my 48-ch analog mixing console.
I am looking into automating some analog levels, thru VCA's in my console, and purchased a system that listens to HUI and transforms HUI fader levels into analog voltages driving the console's VCA's.

Initial testing has been succesful; playing back a volume curve written in Reaper or manually (using the mouse) moving Reaper's faders do control my analog VCA's.

Next I purchased an Avid Artist Mix.

To my surprise, when I ride the faders of the Artist Mix, the Reaper faders follow as expected but no HUI messages are sent out 'in real time'.
Which leaves me with a problem: I don't hear on my analog VCA's what I am doing on the Artist Mix's faders. Playing back previously written rides does work as expected...

Which leads me to following question: Is there a way for any incoming fader control messages to be directly forwarded in real time to the HUI out ports?

I guess I'm looking for a mechanism similar to audio 'auto' input monitoring: HUI out = in when in record, HUI out = computer playback when in playback.

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

I also want to mention how very cool and useful the 2nd row display is with the pan status and fader level. Thanks!

Couple of questions:
1. Jog wheel doesn't respond. Is that me, or the csi? Anything I can do?
2. Master track fader, is there any way to get that back to the dedicated fader on the MCU type surface?
3. How does one set this up so that the C4 will control a selected track's plugins?

Not you, not implemented yet.

Yes there is a concept called pinning, whereby you can Pin a track to a channel.

You need to setup any 2 keys on the surface, one for Pin and one for Unpin.

Now bank so that the Master track is on Channel 9.

Select that track via the GUI.

Press the Pin button you have mapped.

Save the project.

Now the Master will always appear on Channel 9.

There is already a C4.rst, so that's already done.

You will need a C4.axt with only the following line:

TrackOnSelection MapTrackAndFXToWidgets

See Console1.axt for example.

Then you need to make .fxt files in order to map your plugins to the C4.

Some others have C4's and may already be doing some mapping, please chime in anyone who has already done some mapping, hopefully we can make this a community effort.

First off, I would recommend against using HUI if possible, Mackie Control Protocol is much more widely supported.

Does your purchased system also do Mackie Control Protocol ?
Have you got that system set up as a HUI(partial) in Reaper ?

How are you interfacing the Artist Mix:
EuCon
stock Mackie
Klinke
CSI

Hi Geoff,

My purchased system does HUI only; I've set it up as HUI (partial) in Reaper.

I interfaced the Artist Mix using Eucon for initial testing.

No problem to use the Artist in MCU or HUI mode, should it offer a solution.

Thanks!

Gotcha', I would try the Mix in MCU mode with the stock plugin first to see if that works.

Ok, pinning worked great, now I get it. Thank you again.
As for the C4, I did all that, still nothing. I used the ReaComp map that was in the Console 1 folder, but nothing shows up. I imagine I would have to map specific rotaries? I'm not quite sure. I am getting input from the C4 in the monitor, so that's a start.

So yes, if anyone wouldn't mind sharing some C4 mappings that would be swell

Now that I've got the mixer working pretty well I'll be using this as the main controller for it....thanks again, this is really looking good over here! But I do have a couple more questions/feedback:

1. The display, I am not sure I remember reading or not that a previous project's values will "stick" to the display.
2. Similar, the level meters sometimes activate on empty tracks. This doesn't just happen when changing projects, happens on new startup/restart as well. The signal doesn't really seem to match any specific track either. Sometimes it's more than 1 "ghost" track.
3. Time display, only min/sec for now?
4. Pages, how does one use the MCU-Send AXT and how does one sync and switch pages? Or, am I thinking too far ahead. I am interested in controlling the sends from the controller as well, not quite sure I understand how that all works.

As you say, you will have to map the rotaries.

If you set the number of C4 Channels to 8, as you likely should unless you're doing something very esoteric, the rotaries will have names like RotaryA1...RotaryA8, RotaryB1...RotaryB8, etc.

Just take a look at he C4.rst, Console1.rst, and ReaComp, I think you'll see the pattern, if not, ask for clarification.

Ok, hadn't heard this one, likely a bug if true.

Assuming you have the smpteBeats button mapped, add this line to your MCU.axt:

smpteBeats CycleTimeDisplayModes

You should already have this basically in the shipped maps.

Just change the ArtistMCU flavours to MCU flavours.

Make sure SynchPages is checked in both the regular and sends pages.

Notice in the MCU.axt that the F1 key is mapped to NextPage.

That cycles through the pages.

(sorry, don't know how to multiquote like that!)

Ok, one question/clarification. I see the rst for C4 and Console 1, I think I understand the mappings there. When I look at the fxt for ReaComp, I see:

VST: ReaComp (Cockos)
Threshold Thresh
Character Gain
Attack Attack
Release Release
Ratio Ratio
Compressor Bypass
Parallel Wet
CompressorMeter GainReductionDB

What I don't see is the connection between the parameter above and the rotary for the C4. So, does that mean I would change the fxt content to something like?

RotaryA1 Threshold
RotaryA2 Character

Or does that need to be added to the rst?
(editI just realized I believe this needs to be the rst, like the console 1 rst file. I will try to copy that file and edit it accordingly...

And, in the fxt what is Threshold vs Thresh?
The fxt seems to just be a list of FX parameters?
I feel like I'm almost grasping this, but I know I'm not yet.

Thanks for the other info. I will try those tonight.
For the bugs, do you need me to take a pic or anything to show you?

Oops, another quick question:
Is there a way for the surface to follow Reaper selection? Currently it already works opposite, but I like how other csurfs follow reaper also. I have adhd so this really helps keep me in line

Have said thanks yet?

You almost have it right.

The first parameter is the control name, the second param is the ReaComp param name

There is a control named Threshold in the Console1.rst file

There is a parameter named Thresh in ReaComp.

There is a control named RotaryA1 in the C4.rst file (well, it gets auto-generated when you enter 8 for number of Channels)

You want to replace Threshold with RotaryA1.

RotaryA1 Thresh
RotaryA2 Gain

etc.

No need to worry about those non-showstopper bugs right now, don't forget this is pre alpha software

Ahhh, ok I think I just heard a light bulb turn on in my head!

Indeed, non-show stopper and I'll leave everyone alone for now whilst I play with this new info.
edit: for a pre-alpha...this thing really rocks, does some things very well and better than the others for sure. I just learned that pressing the pan pot changes from pan to width....with visual feedback. Whoa!

Cheers dude!

Don't freak out if you think it looks a bit complicated- most of it is cut'n'paste It's based around a single C4 'Cell' like this :

Code:
DisplayUpperD8 "Rotary FX parameter name" TrackFXParamNameDisplay "Short Display Name"
DisplayLowerD8 "Rotary FX parameter name" TrackFXParamValueDisplay
RotaryD8 "Rotary FX parameter name"
Toggle+RotaryPushD8 "Press FX parameter name"
These are the Displays, Rotary, and Press for Cell D8, one of the 32 available on the C4 (A1-D8)

The ReaComp VST Parameter dump looks like this:

Code:
VST: ReaComp (Cockos)
Thresh
Ratio
Attack
Release
Pre-comp
resvd
Lowpass
Hipass
SignIn
AudIn
Dry
Wet
PreviewF
RMS size
Knee
AutoMkUp
AutoRel
ClsAttk
AntiAls
Bypass
Wet
This is where you get the FX parameter names from. The "Short Display Name" lets you replace the actual parameter name with an abbreviated version that displays better, if the original is too long to fit. Strictly speaking the " " quotes are only necessary if the parameter name contains spaces, but I use them all the time because it makes the parameter names stand out from the control functions.

Happy mapping!

wow, thank you! I have bookmarked the post so I can refer to it. That actually all makes sense and will be super helpful

But, it didn't work. I copied/pasted that into the fxt file, nothing.

Then, I went back and c/p the 2 lines Geoff gave me for thresh and attack. I got an led to light up on the ring of the first 2 knobs A1 A2. The knobs didn't do anything.

Then, I messed everything up somehow. Now I need to start over...maybe tomorrow.

What's in your C4 axt file? I just have the one line Geoff gave me.
Are you using the stock C4 rst?

This works :-)

So basically my problem is solved.

Don't know why Eucon behaves differently though...

I'll give it a try with the CSI plugin as well and report back.

Thanks Geoff!

Well...

I wrote the EuCon support for Reaper, it is a VERY different beast compared to most controller protocols, I mean COMPLETELY different

Ok, I have all that. I can now see the led ring at the 0 mark (about 7 o'clock) on all of the programmed rotaries, but they don't do anything. And they stay lit there even when i close the program.

Also, if I'm in the sends page using MCU send, how do I switch the send for each channel?

edit! I found it several pages back, I'll try this later tonight. Missed it in the axt file

Shift+ChannelLeft TrackSendBank -1
Shift+BankLeft TrackSendBank 1

Hi,

I've been trying to get the CSI plugin to work but no success so far...

I've followed the instructions from the Readme PDF:

-CSI folder is inside the Reaper resource path
-DLL is in the \Plugins folder (Win7); dylib is in \Userplugins folder (OSX) => same folder where my Eucon DLL/Dylib lives.

In Reaper, I see the 'stock' control surface options and the Eucon option, but no CSI shows up in the CS Mode => CS Settings menu...

I'm using Reaper 5.1 64bit, tried on both Mac and Win, on two different machines.

What am I missing?

Thanks

You might need a newer version than 5.1.

here is an update: This is AWESOME!

I have everything pretty much working now on the Qcon ProX/XS/C4 consistently. And have updated the mappings for my workflow. The sends page works great and is perfectly synced.

Somehow I was able to get the C4 working well also. I say somehow because I spend about 2 hours trying to get it working. I didn't get it working, and had to stop for a recording session. But suddenly about halfway through the session things started appearing on the C4, and now plugs will show up when I select a track. AWESOME! I've not got some very useful things mapped and they work pretty consistently. But, I have a recording track template, one of the tracks is set for recording and has some mapped plugs on it. When I select this track, none of the plugs show up. But if I duplicate the track, then both will suddenly work with the C4. It seems like it won't map to the C4 if selecting the LAST track in a project.

Here are some more questions/comments. I know this is still in development but just some things I noticed that I don't think were mentioned before:

1. I get some weird characters on the C4, random cells and seemingly random characters when there is nothing on that cell. Not a lot, just a few. Wondering if it's related to the "ghost" track level meters I mentioned before?

2. C4 also does not always clear the display when closing a project, similar to the mixer.

3. On the Qcon, sometimes some of the buttons don't light up (play, stop) but the buttons still work. Sometimes the clock display is blank or freezes. Sometimes the select light stays on even when the track is not selected. Sometimes I can clear the "ghost" tracks and select light by banking through those channels, but not always.

Geoff, one last thing I would like to ask about, if that's ok.
The Qcon ProX has a master fader, but also has a master LED level meter. This meter is not like the others, it has L/R meters (stereo) where the others are just a single meter. That master meter does not light currently, and it doesn't light for any of the csi plugins....or really any other DAWs for that matter.
Also, this Qcon ProX has a second display, also with 2 lines. Currently it does nothing, but it would be cool if we can take advantage of it.

If this was possible, what would you need? I am in contact with support at Icon and I think I can get any info, just let me know
