Default Vocal Recording problem

Hi guys,

I have purchased a small mixer and microphone to record my singing with background music. However I have been struggling to get the equipment work properly without any result. Your helps and advice will be much appreciated.

Here it goes, it's kind of lengthy but I tried to explain my problem as thoroughly as possible.

1.hardware
1)Behringer QX1202USB, Mixer & Audio interface
2)Behringer C-1, condenser microphone
3)LG laptop, i5 processor, 4GB RAM, Windows 7

2.Drivers
1)64 bit USB ASIO driver : BEHRINGER_2902_X64_2.8.40
2)Combined 32/64-bit 3rd party ASIO driver by ASIO4ALL

3.Recording S/W
1)Reaper 64 bit

4.Hardware Setting
1)C-1 to CH1 of the mixer, Headset to ‘Phones’, QX1202 to laptop by USB connection
2)All the knobs are turned down to 0 except the gain and level of CH1(microphone) and the Phones/CTRL RM
3)All the sound settings on my laptop are set to “Behringer USB WDM AUDIO 2.8.40”

5.Problems
I cannot record my voice with the background music and real-time monitoring. Here goes the combination of settings and problems for each case.

Case 1.
Setting
USB/2TR to phones/CTRL Pushed down
USB/2TR to Main mix Not pushed

Problem
Voice signal to mixer and laptop -> OK
Recording -> OK
Voice to headset -> no, only the music came through the headset
Background music on Track #1 -> OK

Case 2.
Setting
USB/2TR to phones/CTRL pushed down
USB/2TR to Main mix pushed down

Problem
Voice signal to mixer and laptop -> No
Recording -> No
Voice to headset -> No
Background music on Track #1 -> OK

Case 3.
Setting
USB/2TR to phones/CTRL Not Pushed
USB/2TR to Main mix pushed down

Problem
Voice signal to mixer and laptop -> No
Recording -> No
Voice to headset -> OK, real-time monitoring was possible
Background music on Track #1 -> No

Case 4.
Setting
USB/2TR to phones/CTRL Not Pushed
USB/2TR to Main mix Not pushed

Problem
Voice signal to mixer and laptop -> ok
Recording -> ok
Voice to headset -> OK, real-time monitoring was possible
Background music on Track #1 -> No

As for case#1, when I clicked on the ‘monitoring’ button on the Reaper I could hear my voice but it had a delay. I changed the ASIO configuration to fast and relaxed but neither of them worked.

How can I record my singing with the background music in real time??

That should work.

Is it possible that the background music is just too loud so you don't hear your voice on the headset?

Anyway you could try:
USB/2TRK - TO PHONES/CTRL RM: ON
USB/2TRK - TO MAIN MIX: OFF
FX - TO CTRL RM: ON

That way you should be able control the monitoring volume of Channel 1 via its FX send.

Also what do you mean when you write "Background music on Track #1"? Do you want REAPER to record the background music on Track #1?

Default Thanks Chardcore!!

I will try it and let you know how it went.

What I meant was simple. I usually insert the background music on the first track and my voice on the next ones, 2,3 and 4 or even further. It simply meant "whether I could here the music or not"

Thanks for your help!

Default I want to remove FX

Hi Chardcore,

I tried the way you told me but when I pressed the FX to ctrl rm, I could not hear the music. In addition, I had to sing with the FX but I don't want any effect while I sing.

In summary
to phones/ctrl rm -> pressed
to main mix -> not pressed
fx to main -> pressed

result was
Couldn't hear the background music.
Had to sing with the effect.

Any suggestion?

no answers to OP, but this reminded me of some nightmare where we tried to get an alesis fw-mixer to work for overdubs without success.... i think in the end we just plugged the bases/music to a guitar amp and got on with the hollerin'.... maybe theres still some ironing to do in these combined mixersoundcard hybrids?? or maybe we should have rtfm, but we were in some bunker practice room with whatever craptacular stuff we happened to have...
