Default Open Source, Affordable Midi Controller

Don't know how many of you ever visit Kickstarter. It's basically a crowdsource-style funding site for projects. These projects can range from music to art to electronics to virtually anything. People pledge a reasonable amount of funding (small amount) and when the required total is reached, those pledges are cashed in and utilized. If the total isn't reached, nobody pays anything.

Anyway, one of the projects now is a 48 channel, open source midi controller. Looks interesting, but I'm not entirely sure exactly how this would be used. Are there any midi experts out there that can give some examples of what this would be useful for, and how difficult it would be to interface/program it?
