Need a good free bass vst.
Hi guys, I'm using Addictive Drums and want a good bass guitar vst to go with it. I don't really want to have to pay for one so a free one would be good. I have searched the web but can't really find what I'm looking for. Are there any recommendations from you guys? Thanks!

There's also a free version of Amplitude that has one bass amp.
http://ikmultimedia.com/amplitubefree/features/
My setup is one track amp sim, one track that Sansamp Bass Driver copy I posted. Mix the two to taste.

No, on neither. You guys are talking at cross purposes. Allow me:
Here's your free bass guitar vst:
http://www.yohng.com/software/bass.html
(TBH, you'll do much better with a free soundfont player and a free soundfont).
Play the MIDI through that, then send the resulting audio to the amp and driver sims.

The free Emu ProteusVX has a bunch of great ones.

The whole file I down loaded was pretty vague, I had to search to find the Setup.exe. There's also several sub-folders in the Zip file that obviously didn't get copied or if they did I have no clue where they went.
I'm on Win7, could that be the problem? It says something to the effect that it's only been tested on XP and Vista but says it probably works on other windows.

If someone could correct this issue it would be great as I may end up with the error myself.
Also, I havent got a MIDI instrument to play such as a keyboard. I am importing the MIDI notes manually on the MIDI item itself (tedious but gets the job done). Are these bass vst's still the way to go? Or do they require input from a MIDI or real instrument?

I'm assuming Emu ProteusVX works with samples or some other sound generating system and require midi input by one means or another, so your midi files should work fine.

I think you either got a corrupt download, or you didn't look very hard. I just installed this, on Windows 7, with no problem.
There's more than one setup.exe.... the one you want is @
(Your downloads folder)\ProteusVX\Proteus VX\ProtVX\setup.exe
You will be prompted to ID your plugins folder.

Thanks Fex, yes that's the one I ran. I saw the other too but it didn't look right.
I'll try this again when I get a chance. The instructions I saw said you could run the setup from anywhere and that may have been the problem, I did it off a USB stick.

I know you asked for free, but I thought I'd post this for you to consider or anyone else who's looking for a bass:
Depending on the genre you're making, SignalsAudio ZomBass is pretty good for metal and rock. Sure, it's sound is a little limited (no slides, etc) and it doesn't seem like it's multi-velocity layered, but I bought it anyway as it's dirt cheap (costs only $20) and you know what? I used it in one of my mixes (which is still kinda unfinished) and it sounds great.
The only problem is that you need the full version of Kontakt. I know the creator of ZomBass is working on an update (I read so from him on another forum), but I'd wonder if he's down for putting out any other formats, like a soundfont?
