Default 2.030 MIDI SPP very unstable now (FIXED)

I have Reaper slaving Cakewalk, my jv1080 and my mpc1000. Everything was working fine before I upgraded to 2.030 today. The midi spp is now totally unusable. This is HUGE for my setup.

To illustrate what I am talking about I recorded it. The first mp3 is Reaper 2.028. The second mp3 is Reaper 2.030 sending out SPP info and triggering the exact same sequence. Hear the difference for yourselves:

mp3 Version 2.028

mp3 Version 2.030

So it looks like I am stuck with 2.028 until 2.030 is fixed.

FIXED (2.031)

I just downloaded and tested v2.029. It sounded the same as v2.030.

So the last working version is v2.028.

happens with "open device in low latency mode/low precision mode" enabled or disabled (for the midi output)?

I had it disabled on all 3 versions. 2.028 is the only one that worked.

You think I need to enable it in 2.029 and 2.030?

I doubt that will make a difference, but I am willing to try anything because at this point, I can never upgrade if they don't fix this.

Just did a small test (midi-loopback):

- RME HDSP 9632 (drivers 3.056 / firmware 153)
- Reaper 2.030
- 1920 ticks per quarter note
- 170 bpm project
- original notes quantized to 1/4 notes

=> more jitter in high precision mode. fixed offset, but less jitter in low precision mode.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Anyway, to my surprise, the low latency setting DID have an effect. Here are my results:

v2.028 low latency setting ON: SPP very unstable... sounds just like the mp3 I posted of the unstable 2.030 version

v2.028 low latency setting OFF: ABSOLUTE PERFECT SYNC!

v2.029 low latency setting ON: ALMOST back to normal... the sync was pretty good, but I still notice a slight variance in the sync... not nearly as bad as what I posted before, but still unacceptable. Here are new mp3s I made today to let you hear what I heard today.

First mp3 is v2.028 with low latency mode OFF: PERFECT SYNC.

Second mp3 is v2.029 with low latency mode ON: BETTER, but still not there.

v2.028 low latency OFF

v2.029 low latency ON

Hope this helps.

I will have to do some more testing/experimenting, but what I found was this:

2.028 probably worked particularly well because it switches the device into a higher time division mode.

This however caused big problems after some time with some MIDI drivers.

Can you try this build, with low latency mode OFF, and see if it is better?

http://reaper.fm/files/reaper2030_spp1.zip

(this one is the same as 2.030, but with higher time division).

Install by unzipping the EXE over your existing installed 2.030 reaper.exe.

The new build?

Too bad it makes some MIDI drivers extremely unhappy... Oh well I'll add an option...

Yes. The new build. The zip file you posted. It worked PERFECTLY!!! You don't know how happy I am about this, Justin.

FWIW, I am using an Edirol UM-550 (5x5) midi interface.

Thanks so much for this awesome program and for working on this issue as it was a HUGE one for me.

OK you asked for it, one more, that should handle tempo changes with less error:

Okay, no problem. I'll test this in just a minute. I love testing stuff. I can add a whole bunch of tempo changes to my sequence too if you want me to. Just to test it. I'll report back shortly.

Oh wait... I just realized I have Reaper as the master so adding tempo changes in Cakewalk (slave) won't test that part properly. So I'll just do my normal testing. BRB

Well, I also have no direct knowledge of it either... I have only heard rumors, but the rumors say that it's VERY VERY tight! LOL!
