Loading VSTis

Would someone provide some assistance on how to load a virtual instrument,
such as Ivory or Pianoteq, into Reaper? Where is there some guidance in the Beginner's book, or the basic manual, or "Reaper Power" on how to load a
VSTi?

I play a digital piano, in a very amateur way. Someday I would like to be able to:

record my playing and share with friends and family via e-mail,

load and play virtual instruments, such as Ivory and Pianoteq, and

edit recordings

Recording and editing are topics covered in the manuals (even if I can't manage to do them). But I haven't yet found any instructions on how to load
and use a virtual instrument.

Thank you for any references or guidance you can provide for me.

This is copied from the manual (section 3.25, page 80). The information is there, but it can be hard to find.

"If you are intending to use a virtual instrument (suc
as a VSTi or DXi plug-in) for recording a MIDI track,
you should choose the Insert virtual instrument
on new track… command. This command can be
accessed either by choosing Insert from the main
menu (then Virtual instrument on new track), o
by right clicking over the vacant Track Control Panel
area and selecting the required command from the
context menu."

Getting this working the first time you try it can be difficult. Some other things you may need to do:
1) make sure the VSTi's .dll file is installed and Reaper can find it
2) Arm the track for recording (the AR button)
3) Turn on monitoring for the track (the little speaker icon)
4) Select the correct midi input for the track, if you've connected an external keyboard

You can see that 2,3 & 4 have all been done at the top of picture on that manual page
