a solid audio interface that also has an SD card capture on it?
I thought there was some kind of USB interface that also functioned as a standalone recorder...
it would be rather handy.

ive had those, I wouldn't say they are solid as interfaces, unless the drivers have been updated - can you play guitar through them at low latencies?

There's a very new afforable 16 channel recorder box around. But I don't remember the brandname. It's from a German company that makes the drivers and reference designs for most of the audio interfaces on the market.
Let's see if I can find it. Or memory comes back ;-)

Fireface UFX = Cat's meow for that purpose but way likely out of your expected price range. You can toss a 32GB USB stick on it and go to town.
There is another dedicated device for this purpose but it costs about the same price. Likely others out there but these are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I have the UFX it does that job pretty well. I use it when I don't feel like formally going to a DAW first. IIRC it saves the audio as multichannel.

Doesn't Zoom have a handheld with stereo mics and XLR/TRS combo jacks and an SD card capture. I could see something like that being handy. I've seen guys record impromptu music store performances with 'em and sync to video taken from a little farther back.

The Zoom R8, R16, and R24 units can be used as USB audio interfaces or as standalone recorders. When in standalone mode, they write .WAV files to an SD card in per-project folders.
