Unable to use alsa midi software ports

In reaper we can only see hardware (kernel) devices but software (user) ports do not show up.

This is quite unfortunate since there are a lot of tools that work with user ports that we can't combine with Reaper in our workflows.

Please enable the use of alsa midi software/user ports so we can integrate Reaper with other tools on Linux.

Can you describe it in more detail? Which midi software ports are not displayed?

Not a single one.

Reaper only displays hardware/kernel ports.

Try using JACK, and then do the routing in qjackctl.

I used to use two separate M-Audio Delta 2496 cards, and the only way I was ever able to get both cards working in REAPER for Linux was to use JACK and add the second set of stereo inputs using the routing in qjackctl. Besides making hardware inputs and outputs route-able, JACK can also make connections between multiple audio apps.

Pipewire can probably do it as well, but I've never used it.

Sorry, I read right past midi and saw "virtual ports", and while in my case it was hardware ports on two cards, one set was being virtualized through the routing matrix in qjackctl.

Of course you can route MIDI in qjackctl, or in qpwgraph on pipewire.
