Solo violin piece
Finished something for the first time in forever. Violin was recorded with a Zoom mic, so I did my best to save it with my mediocre mixing skills.
Composed by me, recorded by my friend from Uni.
https://soundcloud.com/phryq/121a?in...ets/orchestral
I attached a score as well if anyone's interested. I'm trying to use open strings as much as possible, and make it easy to play for violinists.
P.S. anyone know why SoundCloud isn't embedding?

I don't think this forum allows embedding, at least from Soundcloud. You can "embed" a YouTube video, but that is done via BBCode.
This song.. short and sweet. I don't really go out of my way to listen to classical music, but I have ears, like most everyone.. and my ears know when they hear good music. And while I do not go out of my way to listen to classical music, I do like a lot of classical music. Anyways, enough about me.. haha... this short song is beautiful. Well done!

Nice piece and recording.
If the Zoom mic you used is similar to those in my Zoom H4n, it boosts around 5 kHz and emphasizes anything edgy in the tone. So good work in the finished file regarding the violin's tone, which sounds well balanced on my monitors.
If you write something for classical guitar please let me know.

Nice tune Mr PC and excellent playing.
I am a BIG fan of ribbon mics for violin and fiddle. Wonder how this would have sounded with a Royer SF12...

Always impressed by these violinists.
I tried the learn the damn thing in my youth and it's a damn unforgiving instrument.
if you don't master it,it sounds shit.
Regarding mixing/recording I let others comment

Ya, I really wish I'd gotten a better mic. I might extend this and then add some electro and other instruments.

Ya, some notes he's plucking with his thumb. I tried to write as many open strings as possible in a way that they could 'ring out'. The song isn't as difficult as it sounds; he sight-read it, which is partly his performing skill, and partly (I hope) that it's ergonomically composed.

He said it's an older version similar to the H4n. The original tone was harsh, and I'm not good at mixing, so I'm glad it came out well!!
Maybe I'll write you something for classical guitar!! You would use standard tuning? Do you pick with nails? How do you feel about hammer-ons and pull-offs?
Are certain chords easier for you? Or certain techniques?
Would you prefer a solo piece, or one with other instruments (like, if I add piano or keyboards).
If we do this, I'd like to write the song *for you*, so it'd be an ideal song for you to perform. For example, I personally hate bar-chords, but I could do strange invented chords that use lots of open strings (because of my wrist injuries). I finger-pick but with the flesh of my fingers.

yes, if you were so inclined
Good of you to consider this. I'm open to anything.

I don't believe that I have commented on the music that you have previously posted, but I have always been impressed with your compositional skills. I am really looking forward to hearing Timothy play one of your compositions. He is really a top flight classical guitarist, and I suspect that that you will give him something that will be worthy of his skills.

So exciting! I'm on a train and going to Tolstoy's home hopefully to see his anarchist school. I'll try to write something mentally on the train and then finish it after returning next week!

Are there any extended techniques for classical guitar? I used to play classical, so I know the basics...
what about harmonics, are they good for you? natural / artificial?

Harmonics, sure. Up to you. Other things: flamenco rasgueado (strummed 16ths in groups of 3, 4, or 5), flamenco golpe (percussive tap on guitar top). For example: http://www.timothylawler.com/introandsoleares.mp3 (start at :50)

Sorry I've taken so long to start!!! I'm finishing an album, hopefully today or tomorrow, which has taken 2 years to mix.
I've been watching your videos; I used to play classical guitar, but never could do bar chords because of my wrist injury. I'm not very good at understanding which voicings work well for guitar, but I'm thinking to do a similar concept to the violin piece, with as many open strings as possible. For example, would such a voicing here be logical?
Specifically, played as an arpeggio like this
and also, a passage like this, where the same note is doubled on two strings, is this awkward? Would using 5 fingers in your right hand be the most difficult aspect here? Or the left hand chord voicing?
