MP4 videos crash Reaper when Video player opened
Hello,
Using Ubuntu Studio 20.10, with native Reaper 6.29. Suddenly (after an update?) Reaper crashes whenever I play mp4 files with Video player on. If the Video player is off, the audio plays fine. Switching the Video player on and pressing play (or switching the Video player on while playing the file) crashes Reaper without exception. I started Reaper through terminal, and I only get 'segmentation fault'. Other video formats play fine. Any hints? |

I tried on my system to see if it does what you say, I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.2 and Reaper 6.29.
MP4 file plays fine with or without the video window open. |

I imported an MP4 into the current project I'm working on, and it played without issue. I'm on Xubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

Thank you both.
Could it be that I'm using 20.10 and recent update broke something? It worked like a charm for several months, since updating. Considering going back to 20.04 LTS... Or - what's the best file format (and program) to convert mp4 without losing quality? |

I don't really do any video stuff in REAPER, but I'm pretty sure that ffmpeg plays a part in playing MP4s. Maybe that got updated or broken.
I use both KdenLive and Handbrake for video stuff, but it's entirely possible that converting to another format (especially other mpeg variants) might still exhibit problems. |

In case someone arrives here with a higher pay-grade in Linux than me - I checked the upgrade history and these are the files that were updated yesterday (after which the crashes started happening):
(several variants of) libpam, python3, initramfs-tools, isc-dhcp, libfwupd, libssl1.1 and - one openssl:amd64 |

I have something to say here... The other day I worked on a video project for my job and I had a lot of crashes. I talk about a rather dense project, with lots of videos taken by phone cameras on mp4 format mostly. I was thinking about reporting it, but I didn't have time to try to reproduce it more faithfully. One thing that was particularly prone to crash was the Video Grid preset of the video processor plugin. That triggered various predictable crashes and I had to give up trying it out and use other strategies to mix some videos. Other crashes appeared at random occasions, sometimes when moving some video item around or other trivial tasks. Beside the videos, I had an instance of Linux Sampler, an instance of Kontakt and various ReaSamplomatic instances. The crashes occurred mostly when dealing with the video items themselves.
Other - heavy - Vsti projects (that is, without video) are pretty stable here in Manjaro. |

Thank you, Soli Deo Gloria,
My project contains only 1 video, and only 1 plugin - the video fade-in/out. It was a very long video, so then I tried other, random shorter mp4 videos - and they all crashed (except one, and I can't understand why). Go figure. I then renamed the .config/REAPER folder, to simulate fresh install. I imported an mp4 file on an empty canvas, but alas, no joy - as soon as the playhead reaches the mp4 file, the whole Reaper crashes to dust. The issue seems to be somewhere deeper. I would upgrade to UBS 21.04 - but there's a heavy bug somwhere and upgrading is disabled at the moment. |

[Solved]
Bingo! It was VLC. Removed VLC - it all started to work fine. Installed VLC - crashes again.
Finally, in Reaper > Options > Preferences > Video/Import/Misc - changed the Video decoder priority to 'ffmpeg vlc'. Now the video window seems to have a bit less quality, but the quality of the exports is unaffected. |

Thanks so much for the info, Limuxic! I've just had another couple of crashes with a quick, simple video project I had to do today. I'll follow your steps and remove - sadly - VLC. I really like that program, but anyway I've been having some crashes with it lately while watching videos. I'm confident that some of the other Linux equivalents will be, if not as full-featured, at least capable enough for everyday's needs.
Video work with Reaper is something which I'm using at least on a weekly basis, so it's good to know that there's an easy fix for the crashes... |

I don't think that you need to remove VLC. Simply set it as second in priority.
At the moment, the 'Video decoder priorities' in Options > Preferences > Video/Import/Misc are 'vlc ffmpeg'. Simply set them as 'ffmpeg vlc' and restart Reaper. This will (hopefully) stop your crashes and let you keep some VLC decoders for rare video formats, if you ever need them. And VLC is too good to lose:-) |

Fine! That's good to know... Anyway, I'll add a couple of other video player alternatives for general playback outside of Reaper, since VLC is, as I commented, behaving rather badly on Linux...
Thanks again for the tip! |
