Default Updating bios

Hi
is anybody able to tell me in simple words what is meant by this Please?

"In Windows, close all applications and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs. This helps prevent 1.unexpected failures when performing a BIOS update."

I am not sufficiently comfortable with this description do I have to uninstall my installed programs or do I uninstall my startup programs and if I did would I be able to start the computer again?
So what programs should I target and how do I shut them down in windows 7 pro? Please

I am going to try the UEFI update way.
I need to update as my computer BIOS is not a present one and is unable to use two UAD cards, the computer also shuts down on me.
My motherboard is the Gigabyte X79-UP4 Version 1.1

Cheers
Grinder

It just means don't have any other programs running when you update. Esp close background apps like antivirus. So close everything you see running in your taskbar etc (right click them and close).
