I'm having a similar problem, all with USB audio.

But while this tutorial is superb, I'm encountering the same issue: I can't get RATT to log what I'm looking for.

The cumulative histogram information is blank:
"Cumulative Histogram for: ()"

And while I have *huge* ISR count numbers, everything is zeroed out for DPC/DPCTmr.

So far at 6 runs.

Also interesting: DPC Latency Checker is actually showing everything "in the green." I'm suspicious that the poll frequency is exactly out of phase with the actual problem. sysinternals Process Explorer shows clear DPC spikes around 50%(!) every half minute.

I feel like perhaps I don't fully understand how to operate RATT? Or maybe I just have a use case that RATT can't accurately diagnose?

Default DPCs, ISRs, Latency, DPCLat and RATTv3

Guys,

This has proven useful:

http://www.resplendence.com/latmon

in tracking down problematic services, et al. You may want to take a look!

I've found it more useful (and more 'accurate'!?) than "DPCLat.exe" by TheSyCon in identifying dodgy routines/drivers and less-intensive (in terms of its 'learning curve') than "RATT".

There are 3 Tabs: a "Latency" overview, an "Activity" tab (the useful one, with all the ISR/DPC detail) and one with some perfunctory info about "Drivers".

From a purely personal perspective, I have stopped all networking hardware and all related services, but have a major problem with TCPIP.sys interrupting my music with glitches through copious DPCs (as well as moderate - but presumably necessary - nonsense from ACPI.sys too) on my Acer 7720G (3GB, Vista, fully-patched).

Anyone have any ideas on why TCPIP.sys is such a problem and/or whether I can disable it entirely (probably through SysInternals' "AutoRuns" app)?

I dual-boot this Vista machine - and am lucky enough to actually have a couple of physical Acronis-managed boot drives in it (rather than multiple Windows partitions on a single physical drive) - but, if necessary, I don't mind having no Internet access on the 'Music DAW' drive, if it will cure the nasty and unpredictable audio behaviour on such a well-spec'd laptop.

Whilst I'd like to have the ability for network access from this laptop, when booted as a Music DAW - for s/w updates, maintenance, et al - I'll readily forsake it in order to make some half-decent music!!!

So, what to do ...?

All reasonable help welcomed.

Cheers,

Steve.

I'm running Windows Vista Premium on a Compaq Presario CQ60-224 NR laptop with 4 gigs o' ram, dual Intel T3400 2.16/2.17 mHz, onboard Intel 4500 graphics chip, and a Tascam US-144mkii USB interface.

After a factory install with up-to-date drivers, Reaper and GTR3 sound horrible. After making major changes to the settings as described in this and other threads, I've gotten a HUGE performance boost. I went from lots of red spikes in dpcl to an occassional spike, mostly green with some yellow. Currently, I'm running at anywhere between 51us, mosty around 1000, with hardly anything over 2000, with an occasional spike...one hit 3006us during the writing of this post. It looks like one driver is real bad, the rest...

I installed RATT. Here's the results:

I've disabled the nic, cam, USB card reader, onboard fax, and the onboard sound. This helped, but not much.

What really improved performance was turning off the page file and a lower screen resolution. After doing these two things, it flies...as compared to the factory install.

Does the report show where the problem is (it's all gibberish to me)?

Thanks!

RATTV3 doesn't work on 64 bit Windows. For a Win7/64 alternative check this: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1402...dpc-interrupt/

used latmon and xperf to monitor the dpc and both point to wdf01000.sys.

Would it be safe to disable it? Because I've been looking everywhere and cannot find anything to disable this process.

edit: drivers are up to date, W7 x64, 4gb ram, FA66

Alas it seems to be hard to find out what wdf01000.sys does exactly. The best info I could find is that it belongs to the "Kernel Mode Drivers Framework" which means that a lot of drivers could use it, it might be not responsible for DPC issues in a causative way (a driver using it may cause that instead) and disabling it is most likely not possible then. But that's mostly speculation from me.

Might be your 2nd choice candidate in the report/logfile, if at all - remember that DPC spikes on the checker display have to coincide time-wise with the audible problem to mean anything.

thx Ollie. The usb thing is the second on the list, will try to check that when I get back from work.

Some red spikes do not trigger pops, some do.

It's strange because some days ago I tried to lower the FA66 latency until I had pops then upped the latency a notch, and it was working fine. But 2 days ago the pops came back.

Also I installed the FA66 driver when I had a NEC chipset FW card. I just swapped the card with a TI chip card but did not uninstall and reinstall the FA66 driver. Could that be a problem?

If every driver is working correctly then no red spike should be present? Or are red spikes still normal when computer is under load?

That's "mixed signals". Makes it hard to interpret.

Alas that could point to lots of parts in a computer, some power saving options / CPU throttling kicking in (make sure EIST/C3E are off in the BIOS), a driver bug or any service not running permanently. The firs one is easy to check.

Usually not, they should co-exist but who knows... maybe you can try what happens if you do.

Right. Except on Vista, where yellow and some red spikes are standard and obviously mean absolutely nothing. Even if you're not on Vista, a red spike could still mean nothing. But properly configured systems usually stay in the very low "green" range, even under load.

I disabled quite a lot of stuff in the bios and things seem to run smoother than before, still getting some spikes and pops now and then, but I guess I'll have to deal with it until I find more time to fix everything.

thx a bunch ollie.

Hi all!

I have a big problem with glitch with my sound. I have 2 sound output one trough graphic card and one motherboard both same problem. Played various media player on web you name it problem everywhere. I run DPC and it gave me red bars all the time when the problem was there. This happens after a time computer is on or goes to sleep then wakes up. All drivers is updated even tried with older sound drivers. When i restart the computer shows no red bars and the sound works perfect. I disable everything in device manager one by one with no luck so what can I do now to find the problem? Please help me I am going crazy.

Try disabling all Fan speed controls on the BIOS.

A nice tool to use that hasn't been linked yet is LatencyMon from Resplendence. Lots of good info and download here: http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

It gives you much more info than dpclat.

Quote:
LatencyMon checks if a system running Windows is suitable for processing real time audio by measuring DPC and ISR excecution times as well as hard pagefaults. It will provide a comprehensible report and find the kernel modules and processes responsible for causing audio latencies which result in drop outs. It also provides the functionality of an ISR monitor, DPC monitor and a hard pagefault monitor.

LatencyMon will display the execution time of each ISR, DPC routine and hard pagefault and will resolve them to the drivers and processes responsible for executing them. It will create a comprehensible report but it will also represent all sampled data in a detailed manner allowing you to perform in-depth analysis.

www.resplendence.com
A working equivalent to dpclat.

Not quite as user-friendly but does an excellent job of pinpointing issues.

No idea what ratt (REALTIME ANNOTATION UTILITY????) is for

That's the one I'm running but I think we need to do a course on how to fix what it finds.
