I have a Tascam model 24, and while I am able to use it to record tracks beautifully.. has anyone figured out or can it even be used as a controller for Reaper? the sliders are not motorized but I have not worked on a project larger than the amount of faders that I have.

You can transfer all of the tracks/files* to your computer and do your mixing "in the box".
With "automation" you can automate the virtual faders in REAPER. (See chapter 18 of the user manual.)
There can be big advantages to using a stand-alone recorder. Computers are the least reliable things we own and there are all kinds of configuration options to set-up (or mess-up). Sometimes people have a recording problem (maybe even a blank recording!) and they don't know 'till they play-back the next day.
And, the computer's multitasking operating system can "get in the way", even if you are only running one application, and the operating system requires latency (a buffering delay) which can be an issue if the performers are monitoring themselves through the computer and the latency is long enough to be heard as a delay.
*I'm not sure about the format but I'm pretty sure there's a way to transfer the unmixed-files.
