Default Exporting Midi, need help..

I need to send some midi files to a friend, but I can't get it to work properly. I've got 2 midi tracks I need to
export to a midi file. The first track contains all the drum parts (kick, snare, toms), and the 2nd track has all
the cymbals.

When I use a Type-1 midi file, the 2 tracks end up being 6 tracks, 3 drum tracks and 3 cymbal tracks. 2 tracks have
absolutely nothing on them.

The 1st drum track is empty and the 2nd drum track is just the Toms. The 3rd is the Kick and Snare but it's a disaster,
Many of the notes have extended either into the next note or all the way to the end of the midi file.

The 1st cymbals track is blank, while the 2nd has a few of the crashes but not all. The 3rd track has the majority
of the cymbals.

Then I tried a Type-0 midi file, and ended up with 2 tracks the first having olny a few notes, while the 2nd had the
majority of notes. Also you can't embed Tempo into a Type-0 midi file.

Am I missing something? I can't send these midi files to my friend.

Strange, I am curious too!
If your friend has Reaper, a simple and fast solution might be to send him the project with these two tracks only.

Thanks Paul, my friend has Pro Tools which is why I'm trying to make midi files.

Can you attach a small small part of your project so that we can try?

Okay, DS, I got to thinking about midi channels, that could be the problem, although I recorded all the midi using the same channel but maybe they changed some how.

I think what's confusing you is the import side, not the export side. When importing, for each of the 2 tracks in the type 1 MIDI file, REAPER prompts to ask if you want to explode the items by channel -- don't do this. If you explode by channel, the track name meta-events, which don't belong to any channel, end up in their own dedicated tracks so as not to be discarded.

Okay, I had disabled "Import Multichannel MIDI Files:" so I didn't get that menu.

Perhaps the midi channels had something to do with it as well.

Anyway, thank much schwa, I'm good to go now.

Wow, a solution within 1 hour and 20 minutes. I don't know of any payed support (no matter how expensive!) that can match this!

Hey Tod....

try this, ..it maybe easier:

first open each midi item in the Midi Ed, then select all notes with control+A, then set rt clk any note and set the channel to 1
[currently you do have a few diff channels and unless you are sending to two diff instruments in kontakt you don't need diff channels]

ok do that also for the other track

now make a folder on your desktop and have it open so you can see it even with reaper open
OK now in the reapr arrange view, hold control+alt and use left mouse to drag the midi item from the arrange to that folder... you have to do this one item at a time...

maybe easier than going thru the export method

Hey my friend thank you, I've actually got it all straightened out.

I'm trying to help a lady that lives in Hawaii. She DLed the Sforzando version of SMDrums and I'm going to try help
her set it up in Pro Tools. I don't know anything about Pro Tools so this might be the blind leading the blind.

Too late (I was watching TV!)

Yes, set those Preferences to always issue the prompts, for

I Exported the Project MIDI, using the Consolidate MIDI items "All" the Multitrack MIDI file option. I dragged that file into Bitwig and energyXT. In both cases, I got the two tracks - they looked OK to me.

The different MIDI channels (1 and 2) are not relevant in this case. You may have got the Channel 01 events by editing the clip with "All channels" selected.

What you really want is someone here with Pro Tools too
