Default REAPER does not receive midi!!!

Hi,
I run REAPER v5.980/64 and I have a problem with setting up a midi controller!

I followed every step exactly as told in the REAPER tutorial but it doesīnt work.

I did activate the midi controller as an input device. Did check the use as controller field.
Then I tried to assign a key of the controller to an action parameter, but reaper doesīnt read any midi data.
I checked if midi data is received in the computer with a midi monitor. Everything works fine, only REAPER doesīnt read the midi data at all.

What can I do?

Thanks for help here…

Did you properly set up your audio device and turn it on? Reaper won't use MIDI without an audio device being selected and active.

Yes I did. everything else worked, also the sound...
The sound device is also the midi interface.

You can try the following:
re-install the MIDI device
reboot your computer
use a different USB port
install Reaper with the portable option and see if it works there (in this case it's a problem with your Reaper config)

What exactly is the audio device?

The device is an AxeFx II.
As far as I can see, the midi signal comes in on all midi channels.

How do I install REAPER with the portable option?

Re-run the installer, click the portable option. It will be a new, separate install and won't change your current one.

I did the following but REAPER opened with all the old settings when I clicked it.
Itīs on a mac.
- If you wish to make a portable installation of REAPER, copy REAPER.app to a folder, and move the contents of your
Library/Application Support/REAPER folder to that same folder (so that REAPER.app and reaper.ini are in the same
place). -

And I have still the same issue.

I meant physically plug the usb cable into a different usb port. Don't know why I said MIDI port. Do you have any other DAWs you can test with? Or other MIDI devices you can test in Reaper?

Ok so probably not Reaper then. Did you try reinstalling the AxeFx software? Could be some better info on their forums as well. Sorry if none of that helps. I'm out of ideas.

Well it shouldīnt be a problem with the AxeFx. A midi monitoring program on my computer gets all the signals. But maybe itīs a problem with the midi messages theme-self they are SYSEX messages. Canīt reaper read SYSEX?

Um no. Sysex can only be read by the hardware or software it's intended for. I'm no expert, but I guess that's why it's called System Exclusive. Is that all your MIDI monitor picks up?

Check the docs for your Axe and find out how to send MIDI CC or Program Change messages, if that's even possible. If not, then the MIDI feature is only intended to do system dumps for backup purposes, or perhaps to communicate with some AxeFx software.

Well I use the AxeFx just as the midi-interface. The messages come from an audio workstation with motorfaders and everything. And that seems to send only SYSEX messages. SYSEX should be readable by REAPER. ReaControll midi has a SYSEX monitor, so it should be able to read it.

But after a closer look on the midi-monitoring software, I found out that REAPER seems to mix up in- and output of the AxeFx midi.

I already contacted the AxeFx support.

Thanks for the Help so far.
All the best,
Boris

Maybe (and I don't know what the purpose of that would be), but you definitely can't trigger actions with Sysex.

I don't believe that's possible. MIDI is a one way street, or we wouldn't need two cables to send it back and forth. I don't want to insult your intelligence, but did you hook it up correctly? Cables should go from Outputs to Inputs.

And what's this "audio workstation with motor faders and everything?" Maybe it's supported by Reaper directly if you can find it in prefs/Control/osc/web. It might be the case that control surfaces use SysEx, I'm not sure. But then it needs to be set up there as a Control Surface and not a MIDI device.

At any rate, if your controller is only sending SysEx, that's your problem, not the Axe nor Reaper.

Yes itīs a one way street. Thats the reason why there is a "Fractal Audio Systems - AXE-FX II - MIDI In“ and a "Fractal Audio Systems - AXE-FX II - MIDI Out“ shown in REAPER. The midi-in can be found, where you can a-sign devices as controllers but the AxeFx is, according to my midi-monitor software, sending the signals from "AxeFx II - MIDI Out“. That is why I think that in- and out-ports might be mixed up in REAPER.

The Workstation is old and has no USB-port. Itīs an AW 4416. But I am able to controll the AxeFx with itīs SYSEX messages, why shouldīnt it be possible to control a DAW that way.
And itīs also sending start and stop messages wich also do not show up in REAPER. And they are common MISC transport messages.

Found this on the internet:
"REAPER can send and receive (and record) SysEx"
So at least the SysEx messages should show up in REAPER. If not, there is something wrong with the connection between REAPER and the AxeFX!

It has nothing to do with cables outside the computer, because my midi-monitor-software sees the messages coming in from AxeFx Midi Out.

Yea sorry I can't help you more. Hopefully Axe support will know what's up. There's enough info here at least for someone more knowledgeable to get some ideas about it though. Good luck.

A Control Surface sending nothing but SysEx ? That is weird !

Bome is great !

(There are cost free ways to do this by programing scripts internally in Reaper or by using Cocos' free OSCIIBot program together with LoopMidi, but this would be a lot of
work to set up.)

Well itīs very old and in the SysEx information is everything you need!
Would be great if REAPER would send information of the faders and panning wheels back, so it could trigger the motorfaders in my AW4416.

The CSI Reaper extension should be able to do this.

See the appropriate thread here.

Well I did set it all up, but the only midi message I get from REAPER is a note on and of when hitting Play and Stop.
No midi gets out of REAPER when I move a fader.
