So it seems... I have never rendered to WEBM myself, so I have really no idea.

There might be something in the ffmpeg settings that can speed up the rendering, but Reaper gives us very limited control over the ffmpeg settings.

And it seems that others have had similar issues https://stackoverflow.com/questions/...webm-very-slow

OK ... I have to live with that !

I use WEBM because it gives me the smallest files - I have 100's I have to store.

I had never tried rendering to WEBM until I noticed your post and thought I'd give it a try to see how my speeds compared to yours.

Up to now I have always rendered thusly:

Format: Video (ffmpeg/libav encoder)
Format: QT/MOV/MP4, Size: 1920x1080, Framerate: 30.00 fps
Video codec: MJPEG, 95%
Audio codec: 24 bit PCM

That usually results in Rendering speed of 0.8 to 1.2x realtime, and a resulting file of about 1.5 - 2 gigabytes for a 3-4 minute music video.

So then I tried the following...

Format: Video (ffmpeg/libav encoder)
Format: WEBM, Size: 1920x1080, Framerate: 30.00 fps
Video codec: VP8, 2048 kbps
Audio codec: VORBIS, 256 kbps

This resulted in a Rendering speed of about 0.3x realtime, and a resulting file size of about 46 MEGABYTES!!!! WOW!!! I had no idea that WEBM compression could be so much more efficient. No wonder it's so much slower to render.

I tried playing the two resulting video files side by side and I don't now if I can tell the difference.

How is WEBM compression so much better?

The two I just ran, one after the other, and the MOV file was some 36 TIMES larger than the WEBM. All this time I've been twiddling my thumbs uploading 2 gig files to the web, when I could be uploading 50 meg files?!?!?!

I need to reevaluate just what I'm seeing here.

I think it's a little confusing to figure out about this compression.

I tried my WBBM-method with some mp4-files I had done some years back and they ended up BIGGER the the mp4-file itself !!!!!

So I'm confused - but keeps on with the WEBM anyway !
